Things To Do In Myeongdong Seoul: Shopping, Food, Cafes, and Hidden Gems

Last Updated on April 5, 2026

Myeongdong moves fast. The main pedestrian street is rarely quiet, the vendors are determined, and by evening the whole area smells like hotteok and grilled corn. It’s a lot, in the best way, and it’s the neighborhood most visitors to Seoul end up in at least once, whether they planned it or not.

The district is small enough to navigate without getting lost and lively enough to fill an entire day without running out of things to do. Shopping is the obvious draw, and Myeongdong delivers on that completely with international brands alongside Korean labels, K-beauty stores stacked three floors high, and duty-free options that save real money if you know where to look. But there’s also the street food scene in the evenings, a handful of good restaurants, cafes tucked above shopfronts on higher floors, a few free museums worth finding, and enough cultural experiences to keep non-shoppers happy.

I’ve been coming here for years, sometimes with visitors, sometimes for a staycation with my family. We once stayed a night in a hotel right in the middle of it and hopped in and out at our leisure and it completely changed how I thought about the neighborhood. That version of Myeongdong, unhurried, grazing between stops, watching the carts set up in the late afternoon, is the best version of it.

Pro Tips To Know In Myeongdong

  • A morning visit is best if shopping is your priority. The street cart vendors are still setting up, the pavements are navigable, and you can get in and out of shops without the afternoon and evening crush.
  • An evening visit is best if street food is your priority. The carts are fully operational from around 5pm on weekdays and as early as 2pm on weekends. The energy in the evening is completely different, louder, busier, more fun.
  • For tax refunds, most shops in Myeongdong are tax exempt for tourists. Look for the Tax Free or Duty Free sticker in the window. Purchases between W30,000 and W1,000,000 qualify. Keep your receipt and your passport, and claim the refund at one of the tax refund booths on the main street before you leave the area.

How To Get To Myeongdong

The Myeongdong district people are talking about, the shopping streets, the street food, the beauty stores, is bounded by Myeongdong Station on the south side, Shinsegae and Lotte Department Stores on the west, Euljiro 1-ga Station on the north, and Myeongdong Cathedral on the east. Stay within those boundaries and you’ll cover everything.

By subway: Go to Myeongdong Station on Line 4 and take Exit 6 (stairs) or Exit 7 (escalator) to come out right on the main shopping street. Alternatively, Euljiro 1-ga Station on Line 2 puts you at the northern end, take Exit 6, walk straight, and turn left when you see the crowd. You can’t miss it.

If you’ll be using the Seoul City Tour Bus, Myeongdong is one of the stops. You can buy tickets here and find more information in the guide to the Seoul City Tour Bus.

K-Beauty Shopping in Myeongdong

Myeongdong is the most concentrated K-beauty shopping area in Seoul, possibly in the world. Every major Korean skincare and cosmetic brand is represented, and the competition between stores keeps prices sharp and sample generosity high. Staff in most shops speak English, Mandarin, and Japanese, and samples are handed out at the door.

The main street and its alleys have Innisfree, Etude House, The Face Shop, Laneige, Missha, Olive Young, and dozens more within a few blocks of each other. Most stores are open until 10pm or later, which makes an evening beauty shopping run perfectly viable after dinner.

SKIN1004 Flagship Store (스킨1004 플래그십 스토어)

Most K-beauty flagships in Myeongdong look like every other K-beauty flagship with glass fronted, brightly lit, products stacked to the ceiling. SKIN1004 does something completely different. The exterior is a rock-textured facade that draws you in through sheer contrast with everything around it.

SKIN1004 focuses on sensitive skin formulations, no alcohol, no parabens, no artificial fragrances, and the Madagascar Centella line has built a devoted international following. The first floor is the immersive experience; upstairs is where you test and buy. There’s a photobooth on the upper floor too that you can get photos in… because why not? 3ce Flagship Store, Myeongdong, Seoul, Korea

3ce Flagship Store

3CE is pop-driven, bold, and unapologetically fun, the kind of brand that commits fully to a visual concept and changes it without warning. The flagship leans into trend-forward makeup and visual storytelling that feels straight out of a K-pop set, and the interior is always doing something unexpected. The last time I was there, I found a giant cat lounging on the second floor. Why? Who knows. That’s 3CE.

Beauty Play (뷰티플레이)

Beauty Play is a government-supported K-beauty experience center operated by the Korea Cosmetics Industry Institute, which means it’s not trying to sell you anything. Instead, it’s a space to discover and test a rotating selection of Korean beauty products, many from smaller or lesser-known brands that don’t have the marketing budgets of the big flagships.

What makes it useful: the products change every two months, so there’s always something new. The staff offer personalised recommendations based on your skin type and concerns. There’s a makeup touch-up service where you can get help with base, eyes, or lips. Personal color analysis and skin evaluation are available. Free one-day classes run regularly and you can get a lot of samples to take home.

Cafes To Visit In Myeongdong

There are some super cool cafes to see in Myeongdong and many of them take a little hunting to find because they’re upstairs, so the shops on the first floor get all of the attention.

The Spot Fabulous (더 스팟 패뷸러스)

Right across the street from the Chinese Embassy, this cafe is very cool with a more rustic interior that feels a bit chic thanks to the mirrors and chandelier they’ve installed. Order drinks and some delicious pastries and baked goods on the first floor and then take your goods upstairs. This is a beautiful somewhat hidden cafe in a corner of Myeongdong that’s off the beaten path to most tourists.

Shopping and eating are the main events but there’s more going on in Myeongdong than most visitors realise. Here are the experiences worth carving out time for.

Nanta, Seoul, Korea

See the Nanta Show Seoul

Nanta is Korea’s longest running theater show and showcases a talented troupe that performs both traditional folk pieces and modern numbers all based around an outrageous kitchen and group of chefs. Actors use real food, knives, cutting boards and more to produce cadences and rhythms you probably didn’t realize were possible in the kitchen.

Expect to laugh, be awed, and just have a ton of fun. This is one of the most popular things for tourists to do when they visit Seoul. Don’t be left out. Spend a day shopping and take a nice break by seeing a show in the evening.

Perfume Studio: Perfume Making Experience

Sutome Apothecary, Mangwon-dong, Seoul, Korea

Making your own perfume in Myeongdong is one of those experiences that sounds like a tourist gimmick until you’re actually doing it. With over 150 perfume bases and 20 natural flavours to work with, a multilingual instructor guiding the process, and a custom bottle with your own inscription to take home, it’s one of the better creative experiences available in the neighbourhood. I’ve done this in both France and Korea and the Korean experience is excellent.

Blow Off Steam at the Myeongdong Shooting Range

The space was actually designed by some K-pop stars that wanted to give visitors the opportunity to use firearms they’d seen in action movies and dramas. This shooting range has even trained some popular Hallyu stars including Kim Soo Hyun, Tiffany from Girls Generation, G-Dragon, Yoon Doo Joon and Lee Gi Kwang from Beast, and CL from 2NE1.

You can receive coaching from professionals on the Korean national shooting team and test your firearm skills. There are over 100 firearms to choose from to test out in an indoor live ammunition shooting range.

Korean Traditional Wedding: American Bride in a Traditional Korean Hanbok

Hanbok Experience

While most people probably head to Bukchon Hanok Village to try on a Hanbok and maybe visiti Changgyeonggung Palace or Changdeokgung Palace to take photos, there is the opportunity to have Hanbok fun in Myeongdong too! If you’ve only got a limited time in Seoul and you’ll be in the Myeongdong area, then definitely take the time to try on a Hanbok. It’s a must have experience and there are Hanboks for both adults and children. Try one on and then use their indoor backdrops to take photos with friends or family.

Find Fun InstallationsEuljiro Station Balloon Statue, Seoul, Korea

This fun balloon installation is just outside of Euljiro 1-ga Station, exit 2. There are a ton of installations in and around the Myeongdong area that people walk right by as their noses are buried in their phones looking for the next spot to stop into. Don’t be one of those people.

Take a look around, maybe take some whimsical photos with said statues and have a flying good time. Pretty much every corner near the subway stations features some sort of installation, so check them out.

Find the Korea Postage Stamp Museum (우표박물관)

It might sound really random if you’re a tourist headed to the shopping district of Seoul. But, the Korea Postage Stamp Museum is a great little hidden gem in the Korea Post Office that is right in Myeongdong. It’s not huge, but has some beautiful historic stamps and it’s fun if you have kids and are looking for something to do with them for a bit.

Where To Eat In Myeongdong

There are so many places to eat in Myeongdong that I made a separate guide to the best restaurants and street food to eat in Myeongdong. These are two top choices if you just want a quick recommendation though.

Hadongkwan (하동관), Myeongdong, Seoul, Korea

Hadongkwan (하동관)

Hadongkwan was opened in the 1930s and smack dab in the middle of Myeongdong makes it one of the oldest spots in the area. While many things in Myeongdong are bright, shiny, and new, Hadongkwan is a bit more lived in and loved.

The restaurant only serves two dishes: gomtang, a beef bone soup, and suyuk, a boiled beef soup. Gomtang is a traditional Korean soup made by boiling beef and radish for a number of hours. The soup is said to help replenish you if you’re feeling mentally or physically exhausted, which you definitely will if you’re in Myeongdong shopping it up.

  • Address: 12 Myeongdong 9-gil, Jung-gu, Seoul (서울 중구 명동9길 12)
  • Hours: Every day: 7:00am ~ 4:00pm

Myeongdong Kyoja (명동교자)

This is one of the most popular restaurants in Myeongdong so do expect a wait. Popular with both locals and tourists, Myeongdong Kyoja has been serving dishes to hungry visitors for over forty years. The most popular dish is kalguksu, a noodle soup with hand-cut noodles.

At Myeongdong Kyoja, some other popular dishes include bibimguksu (a spicier noodle dish), kongguksu (a cold soybean noodle soup available in the warmer months), and mandu (dumplings). The dishes are refreshing and filling and perfect for lunch or dinner in Myeongdong.

  • Address: 29 Myeongdong 10-gil, Jung-gu, Seoul (서울 중구 명동10길 29)
  • Hours: Every day: 10:30am ~ 9:30pm

Where To Stay In Myeongdong

Myeongdong is one of the most practical places to stay in Seoul. It’s central, well connected by subway, lively at all hours, which is useful if you’re working through jet lag, and puts you walking distance from a lot of the city’s key sightseeing. From five-star luxury to comfortable budget options, every price point is covered. For even more options, read my full guide for where to stay in Myeongdong.

L'Escape Hotel, Seoul, Korea

L’Escape Hotel

I visited this hotel to write about it for Forbes Travel Guide and it is genuinely unlike anything else in Seoul. Designed to recreate French aristocratic life, complete with claw-foot bathtubs, black and white tiled bathrooms, and rooms that feel more like a Parisian townhouse than a Korean hotel. Lush, lavish, and unapologetically theatrical. Also pet friendly, which is rare.

You can book a room at L’Escape Hotel here on Booking.com or on Agoda.com

Hotel 28, Myeongdong, Seoul, Korea

Hotel28 Myeongdong

Korea’s first member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World — a boutique hotel with a cinematic design concept that keeps things warm and comfortable rather than cold and design-forward. The rooftop garden, library, and gallery of emerging local artists make it feel like a neighbourhood hotel rather than a transit stop. Staff will help with anything.

The Cube Hotel, Myeongdong, Seoul, Korea

The Cube Hotel

The budget pick, a hostel that is considerably more private and comfortable than most, with a bar, shared lounge, garden terrace, and free wifi. The right choice if you want to meet other travelers without sacrificing sleep or safety.

FAQ

What is Myeongdong known for?

Myeongdong is Seoul’s most tourist-friendly shopping district, famous for K-beauty stores, international fashion brands, duty-free shopping, and one of the city’s best evening street food scenes. Most vendors speak English, Mandarin, and Japanese, making it one of the most accessible neighborhoods for international visitors.

What time is best to visit Myeongdong?

Morning is best for shopping with manageable crowds and easy access to stores. Evening is best for street food, carts are fully operational from around 5:00pm on weekdays and 2:00pm on weekends, and the atmosphere is at its most vibrant. If you can only visit once, arrive in the afternoon and stay into the evening to experience both.

What should I buy in Myeongdong?

K-beauty products are the obvious answer. Every major Korean brand has a presence and prices are competitive. Beyond beauty, Butter Shop is worth visiting for Korean lifestyle goods. For souvenirs and traditional items, Namdaemun Market is a five-minute walk away and cheaper than the Myeongdong shops.

How do I get a tax refund in Myeongdong?

Shop at stores displaying the Tax Free or Duty Free sticker. Ask for a VAT receipt at purchase. Bring your passport. Present receipts and passport at a tax refund booth on the main Myeongdong street. Qualifying purchases are between W30,000 and W1,000,000 per store.

Is Myeongdong good for a first-time Seoul visitor?

It’s one of the best starting points. The area is easy to navigate, English is widely spoken, the subway connections are excellent, and the concentration of things to see and do in a small area means you can cover a lot without much planning. It’s not the most authentically local neighborhood in Seoul, but that’s part of what makes it useful, it’s designed to be accessible.

Myeongdong isn’t Seoul’s most hidden or most local neighborhood, it knows exactly what it is and makes no apology for it. What it does extremely well is pack more into a few walkable blocks than almost any other district in the city. Shop in the morning, find a quiet cafe above a shopfront, watch the street carts set up as the light changes in the afternoon, eat soup that’s been made the same way since the 1930s, and enjoy all of the street food carts for dinner. That’s a good day in Myeongdong.
