Museum of Contemporary Art Busan: Where Art and Nature Meet
Last Updated on September 10, 2025
Picture Busan, Korea and visions of beaches and seafood may come to mind, but there’s also a thriving art scene waiting to be explored. We’re most often in Busan outside of beach season, so we’ve seen a lot more museums than sand. One of the best places to dive into contemporary art in Korea is in Busan, the Museum of Contemporary Art Busan (MOCA Busan) (부산현대미술관) was opened in 2018 on Eulsukdo Island.
The building itself is a piece of art, wrapped in living greenery as part of the installation Vertical Garden by French botanist Patrick Blanc. Inside, you’ll find rotating exhibitions, interactive installations, and even a dedicated children’s library designed to look like the reed beds of the island.
If you’re looking for things to do in Busan beyond the beach, MOCA is the kind of cultural stop that makes you pause, reflect, and maybe even see the connection between art, people, and the environment in a new way.

What To See
The museum’s main focus is contemporary and new media art, with themes often tied to nature, ecosystems, and humankind. Exhibitions are spread across multiple floors, and each piece gets plenty of space to breathe, which makes wandering the halls feel more relaxed than crowded.

Vertical Garden by Patrick Blanc
The museum welcomes you before you even step inside thanks to the façade that is a beautiful living wall. Built with 175 native Korean plant species, it symbolizes the harmony between museum, Busan’s citizens, and the surrounding estuary environment.

Onna Onna, Moda Moda by Choi Jeong Hwa
The installations by Choi Jeong Hwa are immediately striking with their meticulously stacked collections. Onna Onna, Moda Moda can be seen from the basement floor, but it accessible via a staircase in the back of the grounds of the museum. Don’t miss a chance to walk down and see it up close!
This piece was created alongside 17 local artists and the citizens of Busan. The artwork aims to explore the personal histories and meaning rooted within each object by bringing together and stacking one by one the household items once used by people, expressing values of coexistence and symbiosis in a manner both commemorative and profound.

Rotating Exhibitions
You’ll want to keep tabs on this museum because they change exhibitions and installations regularly and host special events as well. They provide plenty of reasons to go out to visit and go out more than once.
Fun Fact: Museum of Contemporary Art Busan was Korea’s first public museum for contemporary art!

A major reason to visit the museum is for the Busan Biennale. We visited last year for the exhibition and it was a stunning collection, definitely worth the trip.

Family-Friendly Library
One great perk of this museum is that it also houses a children’s library and play space downstairs. Chaekgrimseom (책그림섬) is a library inspired by the reed beds in Eulsukdo. It’s a bright and inviting space with award-winning children’s books, making this art museum particularly family-friendly.
Because it does take a bit of a trek to get to this museum (it’s not right in downtown Busan), plan to spend a good amount of time here and in the area; see the art, take a break with some books and playing, and then head out to the nearby park.
Things To Do Nearby
If you’re making the trip to Eulsukdo, don’t stop with the museum. The island itself is a protected natural area and a designated Korean Natural Monument (No. 179). Since you’ll be there, make a day of it, and also visit:
- Eulsukdo Ecological Park & Migratory Bird Park: Walk through reed beds and wetlands while spotting seasonal birds.
- Nakdong Estuary Eco Center: Learn about the ecology of the Nakdong River estuary.
- Eulsukdo Cultural Center: Just a short walk from the museum, this cultural venue offers performances and small exhibitions.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Busan is more than just a stop for art lovers, it’s a thoughtful cultural space set in one of Busan’s most beautiful natural areas. Come for the exhibitions, and stay the day for the nature.
