Make Your Own Perfume in Seoul: The .NOTE Seongsu Perfume Experience

Seongsu is one of those neighborhoods in Seoul where I always think I can fit in just one more place. One more pop-up. One more shop. One more cafe. And then I’m exhausted. Seongsu-dong is one of those districts in Seoul that is a blast, but your feet will be screaming at the end of a visit.
Having visited Seongsu many times, one of the biggest tips I can give anyone planning a day in the neighborhood is to intentionally work places to sit down into your time there. There can be a lot of walking, a lot of standing in lines to get into pop-ups, shopping, and if you don’t give yourself somewhere to stop for awhile, your visit can quickly go from fun and exciting to tiring.
With that in mind, the last time I was there with my daughter, we visited .NOTE (닷노트), a perfume-making experience in Seongsu (and a few other spots around Korea), where you can sit down, slow down, and create a fragrance of your own. It’s a unique experience to be sure. There’s no perfumer or staff guiding the experience, instead you’re given access to 60 fragrance materials and guided through the process primarily by video. Not what I anticipated, but was actually perfect for our sit down, cool down time in Seongsu.

What is .NOTE?
.NOTE is a Korean perfumery brand built around the idea that fragrance doesn’t have to be something created or understood only by experts. Their philosophy is summed up rather beautifully as: Scent becomes memory. Memory becomes note.
Rather than having a perfumer determine what you should like, .NOTE has created a system that allows you to smell, select, test, and combine fragrances according to your own preferences. There are 60 fragrance materials available, divided into top, middle, and base notes, and the entire experience has been structured so that even someone who knows absolutely nothing about perfume composition can work through it. You walk out the same day with a perfume you made yourself.

Book in advance: While you may be able to walk in if they aren’t booked, I recommend booking to confirm space. Both the people that came while we were there and we booked in advance, we didn’t see any walk-ins while there. Book through Creatrip, which makes it simple to reserve a slot and pay ahead.

Arriving at .NOTE Seongsu
The transition from Seongsu outside to .NOTE inside was really lovely, like a protected space that isn’t immediately seen or accessible from the main street. Seongsu can be bustling and there are people moving from pop-up to pop-up, lines forming outside shops, and cars and pedestrians squeezing through some of the smaller streets. The entrance to .NOTE takes you away from all of that. Not immediately obviously, after finding it, you go up a staircase and are met with stepping stones that lead you to a door.
The glass door is followed by a corridor so you still can’t see what the space looks like, and then you turn around the corner to find a beautifully calming space with a large table with a mossy green installation in the center and perfume-making stations arranged along either side.
It’s calm, quiet, and minimal. After walking around Seongsu with so many people, it felt very much like we found the perfect zen space for a respite for awhile.
.NOTE describes its spaces as being designed similarly to the structure of a fragrance, moving through top, middle, and base notes. The space doesn’t reveal itself all at once. You’ll work your way through it, much like you do with a perfume.
Is .NOTE A Private Perfume-Making Experience?
I noticed the information for this space says that the experience is private, but I think it’s important to clarify a bit because it’s not like you are in a private room. The perfume stations are arranged around a large central table, with roughly six stations along each side, so you can see other people doing the experience. That said, it never felt noisy or boisterous when we were there. In fact, for about 20 minutes, my daughter and I were completely alone.
I would describe the experience as independent rather than private, a translation issue with .NOTE’s information possibly. You’re given space to work without someone hovering over you, but you may be sharing the larger room with other people.
How The .NOTE Perfume-Making Experience Works
Instead of having a perfumer lead the class, you follow a video tutorial at your station. You watch a section, pause the video, complete that step, and then continue. If you need to hear something again, just go back in the video.
There is staff available to help you if are confused or need assistance at any time, but we didn’t need any additional help until the end when my daughter wanted to backtrack, then the staff was there to help. Don’t worry about making mistakes, or maybe wanting to use your first round or second round aromas instead of the final stage version, they can help you sort that out.
First, Figure Out What Kind of Scents You Like
You aren’t immediately confronted with 60 bottles and told, “Okay, choose”. That would be overwhelming to be sure. Instead, the process starts much more broadly and helps you figure out the types of fragrances you’re drawn to, the ones you naturally gravitate toward, whether that’s something more natural, more floral, or something from another scent family.
Once that’s done, you have a general direction before you head around to the full fragrance library.
Then, Choose From 60 Fragrance Materials
This is where the experience becomes much more specific. The 60 fragrances are organized into top notes, middle notes, and base notes, with two shelves dedicated to each category.
The tutorial tells you how many to select from each, so even if you don’t know the first thing about how perfume is constructed, you’re not simply wandering around smelling bottles with no idea what to do next. I had made perfume before, so I already understood this concept. My daughter hadn’t though, so it was all new to her. She was overwhelmed at the start, standing there before the rows and rows of aromas, but as I told her, just sniff and go with your gut. Go fast through the whole row, move the ones forward you immediately like and the ones backward you don’t, and at the end, go back and see how those you put forward make you feel on a second round.
How long does .NOTE take? The experience is listed as taking around 90 minutes, but ours took closer to an hour. There’s a very simple reason for that. We changed the tutorial video speed to 1.5x. If you want to take your time smelling everything, discussing your choices, and experimenting with different combinations, I’d give yourself the full 90 minutes. Don’t rush it.
.NOTE vs. Greedy Scent: Self-Guided Vs. Perfumer-Led
I’ve now done two different perfume-making experiences in Seoul, .NOTE and Greedy Scent in Bukchon, and they’re built around almost opposite philosophies. At Greedy Scent, a staff member named Iris walked us through every step, smelled what we were creating, and helped us make decisions along the way. At .NOTE, you’re working through a video tutorial on your own, with staff stepping in only if you ask.

For me, the .NOTE format made the experience feel a little less personal than Greedy Scent, where I could understand why someone completely unfamiliar with perfume might want an expert beside them saying, “Try adding a little more of this.”
My daughter experienced exactly that at .NOTE. She didn’t like the way her third round of testing smelled and wasn’t quite sure what she should do next. Fortunately, she had liked her first version. We went back to that one, and with some help from the staff toward the end, she was able to adapt it into her final perfume. And she loved it.
That experience also made me realize there is another advantage to the .NOTE format. Instead of spending the hour listening to a perfumer, my daughter and I spent the hour talking to each other. We smelled things together. Compared our choices. Talked about what we liked and didn’t like. Worked through the tutorial side by side. For us, it turned into more of a mother-daughter activity than a class.
If you’re someone who enjoys figuring things out independently, I think you’ll really enjoy .NOTE’s format. If you’d prefer an expert to guide your decisions throughout the entire process, Greedy Scent (or another perfumer-led studio) might suit you better.
Don’t Worry: There Is Some Staff Assistance
While most of the fragrance selection and testing is self-guided, staff do step in toward the end. Once we’d settled on our combinations, a staff member helped calculate exactly how much of each fragrance needed to go into the beaker. She then completed the final perfume-making process after we’d combined our oils. This was also when we were able to get help adjusting my daughter’s perfume. So you aren’t completely abandoned with 60 fragrance bottles and a calculator.
The idea is simply that your preferences, rather than a perfumer’s recommendations, determine the fragrance you create.
The Finished Perfume
Obviously the most important part, did our self-made perfume actually smell good? Yes! Both of them came out smelling fantastic and what our noses enjoyed. Despite the lack of constant guidance from a perfumer, we both ended up with fragrance we loved. The packaging is beautiful on top of that.
You take your perfume home with you the same day, there’s no waiting period or pickup later. We booked the bottle option, and as a nice bonus, after leaving a review afterward we were offered a free rollerball in the same scent, which has been great for tossing in a bag when I don’t want to carry the full bottle.
Is .NOTE Good For Kids and Teens?
I visited with my 11 year old daughter and she really enjoyed it. I think older children and teenagers who enjoy fragrances, beauty, experimenting, or hands-on-experiences would have a lot of fun here. Just keep in mind that the process requires following instructions, measuring, smelling quite a few fragrances, and making decisions independently.
My daughter needed some assistance, was overwhelmed by the 60 fragrances at first, but we were able to walk it back, take our time, adjust, and ultimately created something she loved. Working through the process together was a great aspect of the experience.

I haven’t personally visited the Hongdae or Gangnam branches yet, so I can’t speak to how their layout or vibe compares to Seongsu, but if they’re where you’ll be, check them out.

No. .NOTE also has locations in Hongdae and Gangnam. The perfume-making process is the same at all three; I’ve only personally visited Seongsu so far.
Who will enjoy .NOTE most?
Couples looking for a different date activity, friends who want to make something together, parents with older children or teenagers, solo travelers who enjoy doing things independently.
Seongsu-dong changes constantly and that’s part of what makes it so fun to revisit again and again. We love going there, but also know that a rest stop is going to be required so we build them in to our visits spliced between pop-up stops. .NOTE was a perfect calm break from the bustling busy streets of Seongsu and now we have a scent to remember the day by.
