Bunker des Lumières: From Secret Bunker to Immersive Art Space in Jeju
Last Updated on November 7, 2025
Always on the hunt to find the amazing regenerated spaces in Korea, I saw an article about Bunker des Lumières (빛의 벙커), a former military bunker turned arts and culture space just down the road and knew we had to visit.
The thing with Jeju Island though is that when the weather is nice, all you want to do is spend time outside. So, we waited for the first rainy day, the kind where outdoor plans wash away fast, and headed to the bunker. Instead of staying cooped up, we were underground in a world of moving colors, mesmerizing sounds, and beautiful light. This once secret state communications bunker is now one of the island’s most popular indoor attractions, perfect for families, art lovers, or anyone looking to escape the rain (or heat).

A Forgotten Bunker Reborn
Built during Korea’s military communications era, this massive underground structure was once top-secret, hidden inside an oreum (volcanic cone) and camouflaged to blend with nature. It remained off-limits to civilians for decades.
When rediscovered, the 3,000m² space, with thick concrete walls, natural air circulation, and completely soundproofing, turned out to be the perfect spot for an immersive media art space.
In 2018, it reopened as Bunker des Lumières, the Korean counterpart to France’s famous Ateliers des Lumières. Since then, it has hosted exhibitions dedicated to masters like Van Gogh, Klimt, Monet, and Dali as well as local Jeju artists as well.

What To Expect Inside
Walking through the dark, maze-like entrance, the hum of music starts to grow until you step into the main hall, and suddenly you’re surrounded. The walls, floors, and even pillars become part of the canvas. Paintings ripple, shift, and stretch with each new scene, matched perfectly to a symphonic soundtrack.

Unlike other media art installation spots we’ve been to in Korea like Arte Museum that has a variety of themes and rooms/spaces, this is more of a deep dive into the artist. There are a couple of rooms, but they’re all telling the story from different angles and perspectives so you can move back and forth and enjoy the installation in a variety of ways.

Because each show plays on loop, about 50 minutes per round, you can enter at any point and stay as long as you like. The cool air makes it especially nice during Jeju’s hot summers, while the moody lights create a cozy, dramatic escape on rainy days.
Pro tip: Bring a light jacket as the interior is kept cool year-round.

Family-Friendly and Rainy-Day Approved
Whether you have art-lovers in the family or just little ones that are curious about colors and sound, the space is really fun. Be prepared for how dark it is, you could lose a kiddo behind a pillar if you’re not watching, but they should come back around again, right?

Kids can dance to the music and chase the moving images across the floor, while adults can take a seat and get lost in the rhythm and color. It’s calm, climate-controlled, and stroller-friendly.
It’s always good to have some backup plans in Jeju where the weather can shift quickly. If you’re headed to nearby Seongsan Ilchulbong or Udo Island and it starts to rain, stop here first. Bunker des Lumières is a great spot for some creative inspiration and fun.
