Breakout Seoul: A Fun Escape Room in Hongdae

Escape rooms are a great team-building exercise, whether it be for work, school, family, or friends. There are varying levels of difficulty to them too, so you can find one that matches your style, whether it’s your first escape room or you’re a total pro.

Looking for something fun to do in Hongdae? While you can do all kinds of things from eating to shopping in Hongdae, there is plenty in between. Breakout Seoul (브레이크아웃 이스케이프) is one such escape room in the Hongdae district. Here’s how to have escape room fun in Seoul.

By Public Transit: Take Line 2 to Hongdae Station, and from Exit 9 it’s about a 10-minute walk.

Rooms

Breakout Seoul has 5 rooms to choose from. The website displays their difficulty level and success rate so you can choose how hard you want your experience to be. I’ve listed them here in order from easiest to hardest. All of the rooms at Breakout Seoul have a one-hour time limit

Chamber of Hocus

• Difficulty: 4/10
• Success Rate: 55%

Mr. Hocus, a notorious criminal who dabbles in the art of magic and uses it in his crimes, has again escaped unscathed from a heist. The hallmark of all his crimes are playing cards bearing the message ‘Hocus Pocus, can you find Hocus?’ He is known to be a dangerous man with a wicked sense of humor. In your search for this wanted magician, you and your team have stumbled into his mysterious Chamber of Hocus in hopes of capturing him once and for all…

Secret of Hocus

• Difficulty: 6/10
• Success Rate: 45%

While tracking the elusive trail of mysterious criminal magician Mr. Hocus, you’ve acquired the Wand of Atropos from the Organization. This wand is one of the most powerful ever crafted, along with the Wand of Mythos and Wand of Alectos, which are rumored to be in the possession of Mr. Hocus. You’ve also uncovered a secret theatre where you believe he has kept all of his magical possessions, including the other 2 wands of power.

However, the Organization says that to destroy his powers, you will need the combined powers of all 3 wands. With this knowledge, you and your team venture deep into the depths of Mr. Hocus’s secret theatre in hopes of ending his regime of crime once and for all.

(Note: This room and the previous room are connected through a story, but you don’t need to have played the first room to successfully complete this room. This is the room my colleagues and I did and we didn’t have any problem solving the puzzles despite not doing the first room.)

Dreadnought

• Difficulty: 6/10
• Success Rate: 35%

127 years ago, the world survived a catastrophic ice age known as the Whiteout and is now going through the aftermath of this global crisis, which blanketed lands with water and reduced the human population by large numbers.

Nations now live on giant arks known as Dreadnought, which are able to sustain ecosystems and life on a smaller scale. Only a small percentage of land remains and every 20 years, candidates will be picked at random to be transported to this land to live out their remaining lives. Being the chosen ones selected this time, you and the rest board the transport vessel with glimmering excitement to finally see land for the first time.

Materia Medica

• Difficulty: 7.5/10
• Success Rate: 30%

A mysterious physician called Han appeared in the small town of Wu Shan one day and immediately became famous among villagers for his remarkable medicine and healing abilities. As the previous top physician in the village, you are determined to find out the secret of this mysterious man’s background and the ingredients of his miraculous medicine. On a quiet evening, while the physician is away on an errand, you quickly sneak in with your assistants to gather what information you can in hopes of recreating the same medicine.

Cerebrum

• Difficulty: 8/10
• Success Rate: 15%

Where am I now? Am I kidnapped? I couldn’t find a way to get out of here. The very last thing that I remember was driving. I only get flashes of memories and yet it all feels very familiar. Sometimes, it’s very vibrant in color and sometimes it’s black and white. And there is this constant beeping sound. It is very annoying. All of these hurt my brain a lot. Why am I trapped in here? Someone please help me. This is so frustrating. I need to find a way to get out of here.

What to Expect

Breakout Seoul requests that you get there about 20 minutes before your scheduled time so that there’s plenty of time to go over the rules and make sure that you understand everything.

All of the rooms have instructions in Korean and English, so everyone will be able to participate. You get to pick a powerup before you go in, with each person getting a special ability that will help you in the room that you can exchange for a hint at any time. There will be a screen in the room with a countdown timer so you know how much time you have left. If you don’t solve the room in time, the gamemaster will come in and show you how it’s done. I only know this because my colleagues and I actually didn’t solve our room in time.

Whether you are able to break out or not, once you leave the room, they do have a shelf of fun props to take pictures with to cement the fun you just had. My group decided to pose with the powerups that we had and some other goofy props. It was a really fun time, even if we didn’t solve the room, and I would love to go again with even more people!
