Where To Find The Fluffiest Pink King Cherry Blossoms In Korea

As the spring air fills South Korea with its temperate embrace, a particular spectacle of nature, you know the one I speak of, draws both locals and travelers from out of their homes and into the streets. The light pink cherry blossoms burst into bloom and crowds rush to see them. While these iconic light pink cherry blossoms are gorgeous, there’s another cherry blossom that I personally look forward to – the double cherry blossom (겹벚꽃), or the King cherry blossom as some people call them.

Distinguished from their single-petaled counterparts, King cherry blossoms boast lavish, deep pink petals that unfurl in double layers, creating a fuller, more opulent display. They also bloom a bit later than the more popular light pink cherry blossoms so if you missed those, you can still catch these!

World Cup Park, Seoul (월드컵공원)

As my avid readers know, the World Cup Park in Seoul is my favorite park in the city. It’s one of the best parks in Seoul and yet still manages to be underrated by so many. This massive park is actually made up of five individual parks so if you head here to find double cherry blossoms, you’ll want to go to Nanji Stream Park to find them.

  • Address: 487-359 Seongsan-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul (서울 마포구 성산동 487-359)

Boramae Park, Seoul (보라매공원)

Another good option in Seoul is Boramae Park, once the grounds of the Air Force Academy, it’s now a beautiful park for locals. If you live in the southern part of Seoul, head to Boramae Park in Dongjak-gu to look for double cherry blossoms blooming.

Misari Speedboat Park, Hanam (미사리 경정공원)

If you live on the eastern side of Seoul, your best bet for King cherry blossoms might be the Misari Speedboat Park. This area was the site for the rowing competitions for the Asian Games and Olympics, but now is most popular with locals for the rows of double cherry blossoms that line the paths.

Gaesimsa Temple, Seosan (개심사); double cherry blossom (겹벚꽃)

Gaesimsa Temple, Seosan (개심사)

When we first ventured south to see the King cherry blossoms, we headed to Seosan which has a number of temples, and a couple elementary schools, that have double cherry blossoms on their grounds.

Gaesimsa Temple is one of the four major temples in Chungcheongnam-do. The path from the parking lot to the temple site is quite remote and curved, but beautiful especially in spring when cherry blossoms are in full bloom.

  • Address: 321-86 Gaesimsa-ro, Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do (충청남도 서산시 운산면 개심사로 321-86)

Munsusa Temple, Seosan (문수사)

Beautiful paths lined with King cherry blossoms lead up to this small Buddhist temple in Seosan. The exact founding date of Munsusa Temple is unknown, but the temple is estimated to date back to the Goryeo dynasty due to a prayer found in 1973 at the Gilt-bronze Seated Buddha in the temple’s Geungnaksiljeon Hall that dated back to 1346.

  • Address: 201 Munsugol-gil, Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do (충청남도 서산시 운산면 문수골길 201)

Namsan Health Park, Dangjin (남산건강공원)

A hidden gem in Dangjin, this park doesn’t seem to make many lists of places to see King cherry blossoms in Korea, but it should! Fluffy pink cherry blossoms everywhere you look. Maybe the locals are trying to hide it.

Agroland is a sprawling range with farm animals and a number of beautiful flowering fields and trees. Visit in the spring to see the flowers and really feel the spring rebirth by milking cows and seeing the sheep and horses and other animals running around.

Bulguksa Temple, Gyeongju (경주 불국사)

Bulguksa Temple is one of the most famous places to visit in Gyeongju. It’s a jewel of the Silla Kingdom and Buddhist culture and was founded in the 6th century. Amidst its stones and gardens, the spring is a beautiful time to visit Gyeongju because it’s covered in King cherry blossoms.

Summeori-gil, Gyeongju (경주 숲머리길)

This seems like a newer area of double cherry blossoms because the trees are shorter and smaller than a lot of other areas. But in the coming years, this will no doubt become more and more popular as the trees grow and create a beautiful tunnel of pink each spring.

  • Address: Bomun-dong, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do (경북 경주시 보문동)

Jinyangho Lake, Jinju (진주 진양호)

Jinyangho Lake, the only artificial lake in the Western Gyeongnam Province, is at the confluence of the Gyeonghogang River and the Deokcheongang River. The wide-open view toward Jirisan Mountain, the wet fog from the lake in the morning, and the captivating sunset are popular among travelers.

Wansan Flower Hill, Jeonju (전주 완산꽃동산)

If you haven’t visited the Jeonju Hanok Village yet, go this year and tack on a trip to nearby Wansan Flower Hill. Jeonju is always a good and pretty easy trip from Seoul which can be done in a day or over a weekend. Wansan Park is home to both beautiful double cherry blossoms and azaleas which bloom at the same time making for a gorgeously floral adventure.

Samcheon Jugong Apartment, Jeonju (전주 삼천주공아파트 3단지)

Also in the Wansan area in Jeonju, this apartment complex has some great flowering trees as well. I think it should noted though, when you’re visiting an area with residents, remember to be respectful that you aren’t taking pictures of people that live there and take your trash with you, etc.

  • Address: 157 Yongri-ro, Wansan-gu, Jeonju-si, Jeollabuk-do (전북 전주시 완산구 용리로 157)

The first area to start seeing blooms, and actually, an area in Korea where you can see flowers all year round, Jeju Island should not be overlooked in the spring for gorgeous double cherry blossoms. If you’re headed to the must-see island, here are some places to see the fluffy pink blooms.
