I was first introduced to them almost a decade ago, but did you know their roots go far deeper than beauty trends? Pyunkang Yul was born from Pyunkang Eastern Medicine Clinic, one of Korea’s top three traditional medicine clinics, with over 50 years of clinical history and more than 200,000 patients treated for chronic skin conditions.
Step into the beautiful Pyunkang Yul Flagship Store and Tea House (편강 율 플래그십&티하우스) in Samcheong-dong near Gyeongbokgung Palace and Bukchon Hanok Village, and you’ll find a calming multi-floor space that blends skincare, traditional Korean aesthetics, and quiet moments of rest. A Skincare Brand Rooted in Eastern Medicine
Pyunkang Yul was developed by doctors from Pyunkang Eastern Medicine Clinic, founded in 1975 with a simple but powerful goal: help the body heal itself. Eastern medicine focuses on identifying the root cause of imbalance rather than masking symptoms, using herbal ingredients to restore circulation, immunity, and natural equilibrium.
What does the name mean? Pyun means comfort. Kang means health. Yul means balance. Together, they represent the optimal state of calm, healthy skin. They focus on gentle, natural ingredients that will strengthen the skin barrier for sensitive, dry, or atopic-prone skin.
Look for the indigo blue: The brand’s signature color is inspired by naturally fermented indigo dye used in Korea for centuries.
Inside the Pyunkang Yul Flagship Store
Samcheon-dong is already one of Seoul’s most historic neighborhoods, surrounded by palaces from the Joseon Dynasty so Pyunkang Yul’s flagship fits naturally into this setting, reinterpreting traditional Korean beauty in a modern, thoughtful way.
The flagship store spans four levels, each designed to engage a different sense and deepen your understanding of the brand. Here’s how to see each floor and what to do there:
First Floor: The Tea House
The heart of the flagship store is the beautiful Pyunkang Yul Tea House, a serene space dedicated to rest and reflection. Here, skincare philosophy extends into taste and ritual. There are a number of seating options in the space that beautifully blends stone and wood accents. Sit side by side and look out over the courtyard or choose a more private artistic room, or opt for a table so that conversation is easier.
The teas that are offered are also ingredients in the products so you can learn more about each and how they cater to your inner and outer health. Your tea time is meant to be intentional and slow.
We tried a variety of delicious options including:
- Bonyeon Yul Tea (Origin Balance): This is a blend of astragalus, one of the brand’s signature herbs, bellflower root and jujube. If you like earthier tea, this is a good one for you.
- Do-hwa (Blooming Peach): A light ice tea that blends the sweetness of peach and floral tones, it’s refreshing and complimented the dish of traditional snacks.
- Green Ritual (Ritual Matcha Latte): Premum Matcha from the Boseong green tea fields, it’s milky, creamy, and if you like matcha, you’ll love it.
- Un-wol (Cloud Moon Ginseng Latte): My favorite, this cozy latte is full of foam that is lightly dusted with cinnamon and features Geumsan ginseng. It’s the right mix of bittersweet ginseng and milk.
Along with the teas, we tried the Sah-gye (Four Season Harmony) plate that features seasonal sweets including mugwort from Geomun-do for spring, nutty buckwheat from Bongpyeong for summer, jujube from Miryang for autumn, and savory perilla from Yecheon for winter. They are a refined selection of yakgwa that are delicious but not too sweet.
We followed that with the Persimmon Embrace Rice Cake. Dried Sangju persimmon are stuffed with walnut and wrapped in a chewy rice cake. It was so good, the perfect ending to our tea time.
Basement Floor: The Herbal Exhibition Space
The basement level explores Pyunkang Yul’s clinical and herbal heritage. After choosing your tea and traditional treats on the first floor, head down here to take a look while you wait for your tea. You’ll see traditional eastern medicine tools, ancient medical texts, herbal ingredients used in their formulas, and displays explaining how these remedies were used to treat skin conditions for centuries.
Some of the herbal ingredients you can learn about include:
- Astragalus root: Known for replenishing the body with energy, it has components that revitalize the skin including flavonoid and saponin. You’ll find this featured in the Basic Line.
- Coptis root: Known for clearing negative energy from the body and reducing body heat, it helps to comfort sensitive and irritated skin. It is also featured in the Basic Line.
- Scutellaria Baicalensis: Known for relieving excess heat in the body and clearing negative energy, it helps treat skin problems resulutng from too much heat. It’s featured in the Ultimate Line.
- Centella asiatica: Found in some of my favorite products, centella asiatica is known for calming irritated skin and bringing back a clearer healthier look. It’s featured in the Calming Line.
- Paper mulberry: You’ve probably seen this in Hanji paper, it also improves the look of skin and boosts positive energy in the body. It’s featured in the Brightening Line.
- Fermented black tea: After fermenting for one month, it contains ingredients like polyphenol and catechin that revitalize the skin and provide a healthy energy. It’s featured in the Black Tea Line.
Second Floor: The Skincare Experience Zone
Head upstairs to explore Pyunkang Yul’s products by line and skin concern. Staff can guide you through textures, ingredients, and usage based on your skin type, rather than pushing what’s trending. I had no idea that Pyunkang Yul had a children’s line. This is where you’ll want to try, test, and ask questions.
The Pyunkang Yul Skincare Lines:
- Basic Line: This line best represents the brand’s philosophy of restoring skin through relaxation. This was the line I used a decade ago when I first tried them. The main ingredient is Astragalus root, or Hwanggi, and is highlighted as providing pore tightening, purification, and hydration.
- Calming Line: This line provides lightweight hydration and is recommended for acne-prone skin. It is infused with soothing ingredients to help with redness and irritated skin.
- Ultimate Calming Line: This line has concentrated herbal formulas that are recommended for rapid soothing. It contains a patented herbal calming formula for fast and effective relief for severe breakouts and troubled skin.
- Brightening Line: This line is vitamin C-based for toning dark spots, reviving dull, tired skin, and helping restore that radiant glow.
- Red Ginseng Line: This is a daily vitality and anti-aging line.
- Black Tea Line: This is for premium elasticity and anti-aging. It’s recommended for skin that is wrinkled and extremely dry.
- Ato Line: This line features gentle formulas that are even safe for babies. It uses honeysuckle extract to help sooth irritated skin and provide deep hydration, ideal for dry and itchy skin.
- Kids & Baby Line: This line is made for kids everyday use. It’s for gentle and worry-free use.
Don’t miss the mother-of-pearl room: Najeonchilgi, or mother-of-pearl, influences the black tea line of the brand and references royal Korean craftsmanship.
Rooftop Relaxation Space
Do not miss stepping out on the rooftop, even if it’s cold. There is a beautiful view out over Gyeongbokgung Palace and the National Folk Museum of Korea. There is seating, so if the weather is nice, just enjoy the views and the calm and quiet of the surroundings.
