Yeonnam-dong Seoul Guide: Things To Do, Where To Eat, and the Best Cafes
Last Updated on July 10, 2026
Yeonnam-dong, a neighborhood near Hongdae (a hotspot for live music, bars, and a local busking scene), has quietly become one of Seoul’s most loved areas to wander. The first six years I lived in the area, it was under construction and no one wanted to cross the street to walk the area. That all changed when Gyeongui Line Forest Park opened. Locals quickly nicknamed it Yeontral Park, a playful nod to New York’s Central Park, and suddenly Yeonnam-dong became a place people wanted to linger.
Today, Yeonnam-dong is filled with cafes, restaurants, creative studios, and a long, thin green park where locals picnic, walk dogs, and rest between errands. If you’re looking for things to do in Yeonnam-dong near Hongdae, this guide will help you explore beyond just coffee shops. There’s street art, cultural experiences, and a few surprises tucked into the alleys.

What To Know About Yeonnam-dong
A great thing about going for a hunt in Yeonnam-dong is that you won’t get lost. The neighborhood is bordered by major roads on the east and south, Hongjecheon Stream to the west, and Yeonhui-dong to the north. You can wander freely, hit a boundary, turn around, and keep exploring.

Things To Do In Yeonnam-dong (Beyond Cafes)

Walk Through Gyeongui Line Forest Park (경의선숲길공원)
This park was under construction for the first six years that I lived in the area so when it was finally unveiled, it was thrilling. Not only is the park, a restoration project in the area, beautiful but it has really made the neighborhood vibrant and lively. The Gyeongui Line Forest park is long and thin as it runs along where the Gyeongui railway line once ran and there are train track remnants to see as you walk.
There is a small stream in the park and events are held there throughout the year. Visitors will mainly stay at the eastern end of the park, but definitely walk all the way until the park ends. It’s not that far, just a few blocks really, and it runs into the Hongjaecheon Stream. If you’re interested in having a picnic near Hongdae, then definitely head here. You can grab food at numerous spots in the area and then take a seat on the grass with friends.

Street Art & Murals
Hongdae, or Hongik University district, the popular neighborhood just across the street has long been famous for street art and murals as well as live music so it’s no wonder that aesthetic hopped over the street into Yeonnam-dong.
While other areas are well known for their mural clad walls and colorful entrances, Yeonnam-dong has not gotten hyped up for the beautiful exteriors so many of the buildings and tunnels in the area possess. Maybe that’s a good thing though.
The alleys can be narrow, the cafes small, but the murals and mosaics are colorful and the coffee delicious. Follow the park back as far as it goes AWAY from Hongdae and you’ll find mosaics in tunnels and go right and you’ll find murals few see.

Try a Bojagi Wrapping Experience
Want to have a cultural experience in the area? Studio Bojagi offers hands-on cloth wrapping classes to learn four fundamental knotting techniques. The class is easy to follow, kid-friendly (I took my 11-year-old), and you’ll leave with two cloths and norigae so you can wrap gifts at home. Even if you don’t take a class, it’s worth stopping by to see the beautiful cloths or have a purchase wrapped for you.

Make a Flipbook at a Photo Studio
Want a playful souvenir? Photobooths are popular all around the city, but in Yeonnam-dong, you can find a unique photo studio that creates flipbooks instead of a four photo sheet. Step in to 50 Page (50페이지), do a short skit with a friend or on your own, and you’ll leave with a tiny book that flips into motion. It’s quick, fun, and surprisingly charming.

Make a Custom Perfume at Greedy Scent
Tap into Korea’s booming fragrance scene. Aromas evoke memories and emotions, so create a perfume and it’s bound to remind you of your time in Seoul. I visited the Greedy Scent Bukchon branch and walked away with my favorite perfume to date. I highly recommend the experience. It’s fun and you’ll have something unique from your time.

Where To Eat In Yeonnam-dong
Yeonnam-dong punches well above its size for food. The neighborhood has an international restaurant scene with Thai, Japanese, Chinese, and Western spots alongside excellent Korean options, all within a few blocks of the park.
The cafes and restaurants tend to be small and independently owned, which means quality stays high and lines form at the good ones. Come hungry and come early for the popular spots.

Thanks, Oat (땡스오트)
This small rustic cottage sits right on Gyeongui Line Forest Park and was a filming location in How To Publish Love (로만스는 별책부록). That’s not why I went there though. For me, the pictures of colorful granola bowls were calling. The eatery serves up amazing thick creamy yoghurt and granola bowls and we were very happy with our chocolate and strawberry and berry choices.

Jincheong Yujeom (진청유점)
Serving something a little different, Jincheong Yujeom is home to a traditional Korean oil mill and presses their own sesame oils and perilla oils each day. They create seasonal Korean dishes and use what is good each month. It’s a great local restaurant with some very good dishes to try.

Soi Yeonnam-dong by Tuk Tuk Noodle Thai (소이연남)
Soi serves up dishes from a pretty short menu but they serve them up mighty well. There is almost always a line outside of this shop and for damn good reason. Oh, is their food very Thai and very mouth-watering.

Best Cafes in Yeonnam-dong
Cafe hopping is an absolute must when you visit Seoul and Yeonnam-dong has some pretty unique and interesting ones to find.

Coffee Nap Roasters (커피냅로스터스 연남동)
This cafe stands out for aesthetics and design. From the exterior you might think it’s like any other simple modern cafe, but enter and you’ll find a purposefully sculpted mound of bricks. When asked why or if there was something beneath the mound that was covered during construction, the barista casually said it was just their concept. What a concept it is.
Coffee Nap Roasters (커피냅로스터스 연남동)
- Address: 70 Seongmisan-ro 27-gil Mapo-gu (마포구 성미산로 27길 70)
- Hours: Every day: 9:00am ~ 10:00pm

Ilgi (일기)
This small cafe in the back of Yeonnam-dong in a quieter area is the perfect place for a coffee or their seasonal selection. We went for their chamoe ade, a very refreshing drink on a hot summer day. The owners are friendly and the style is so comforting. Grab some of the paper and pencils on every table and leave a little note or drawing behind for the next person.
Ilgi (일기)
- Address: 18 Seongmisan-ro 29an-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul (서울 마포구 성미산로29안길 18)
- Hours: Monday – Thursday: 10:00am ~ 6:00pm; Friday: 12:00pm ~ 8:00pm; Satursdays by reservation

Ice Art Cafe (아이스아트카페)
In the heat of the summer, this was the perfect stop. Head in to get a drink served in an ice block. Drink it inside the massive cooler ice room and then when you’re done, head outside where you can hammer the ice block away. It’s definitely a different experience and ideal in the heat and humidity.
Ice Art Cafe (아이스아트카페)
- Address: 30 Donggyo-ro 38-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul (서울 마포구 동교로38길 30)
- Hours: Weekdays: 10:00am ~ 9:00pm; Weekends: 10:00am ~ 10:00pm
Yeonnam-dong is a fun district to wander through. Not as chaotic as the streets of Hongdae across the street can feel, here you can have a picnic, learn to wrap gifts with bojagi, and have an afternoon in a quiet cafe.
If you want to extend the day, Hongdae is a five-minute walk east, read the Hongdae Seoul guide for nightlife, more cafes, and live music venues. Mangwon-dong to the west is another local favourite that most tourists miss.

That Thai noodle soup looks fantastic. I had to view the image in a new tab so I could see it full size!

It is incredible to hear that some places are actually painting over their murals because of too many tourists. Wow – I never thought about that. It’s good to hear that this place has been able to maintain it’s low profile, whilst still being a beautiful area with a lot of stunning art work. I would love to take a wander.

Some of the murals are really great. I will add them all to my Street Art Board in Pinterest for you. We were to go to Korea last July when we left Mongolia and somehow went to Nepal instead. Wish I had chosen Korea I think.
Hallie
Aw, Nepal is amazing too! Now you just have to plan another trip. ^^
