What To Wear In Winter In Korea: Uniqlo Heattech

Winter in Korea can be really frigid and apparently this year is going to be colder than most. Are you ready? Usually people ask when they can see snow in Korea, but it’s really important to ask if they can even be outside in the winter. Some winters are really mild and quite nice, but others are frigid frigid frigid and you really need to prepare or you’ll just be running from interior space to interior space to stay warm.

There are a few things that I make sure we have every year and one thing I make sure everyone in my family has is Uniqlo Heattech. To be honest, I never heard about Uniqlo or Heattech until I came to Korea, but now the company is my favorite for basics and more importantly, my winter clothing… and here’s why.

Uniqlo’s Sustainability Efforts

Uniqlo has been working towards being more sustainable for more than 20 years. One way they are doing that is using plastic to create clothing. The Fluffy Yarn Fleece Full Zip Jacket, for example, uses polyester chips recycled from PET bottles in its fabric. Some products are made with more or less, this is one way they’re trying to reuse what is already here.

Uniqlo also accepts used clothing to transform them into new garments and they work with NGOs to distribute wearable used clothing to refugees, disaster victims, and other in need in the world. Why You Need Heattech

Heattech can look suspiciously thin for something that will warm warm warm you up. I didn’t think it would do much when I first saw it, but my husband convinced me to get some and try it out and now it’s my base layer of choice throughout the winter, and even into the early spring sometimes. There are both shirts and leggings so I literally wear them under everything… or as tops as you can see in the photo below.

Provides Warmth

  • Heattech is made with special blends of material to wick moisture from the body and convert kinetic energy into heat. The clothing fibers absorb heat and keep the body warm. The material generates warmth and fights bacteria to prevent odor and static electricity.
  • Heattech comes with different options from regular to extra warm so you can wear it throughout the winter from the more mild temperatures to the colder frigid temperatures.
  • There is even an Ultra Warm option for sub-zero temperatures. This one is 2.25 times warmer than the regular Heattech but is still thin to fit under clothing comfortably.
  • I think this is especially important to note for kids as well who require breathable clothing that keeps them insulated. Our daughter doesn’t like a ton of layers, but the children’s Heattech is thin enough and comfortable enough that it doesn’t bother her but keeps her warm so I don’t have to worry if she tries to throw off her sweaters or jumpers.

Comfortable Material

  • Comfort is key especially when you have to layer up. Heattech is made of 4 different fibers that allow it to retain heat, dry quickly, and stay stretchy which makes it very comfortable on throughout the day.
  • The material feels light on like a basic t-shirt and yet provides so much more.
  • The material is infused with Argan oil to give the material a soft feeling.

Style Options & Stylish

  • Uniqlo’s Heattech comes in long sleeve, short sleeve, and sleeveless or camisole options so it’ll be comfortable from season to season. This is important because I definitely think the long sleeve is perfect for winter, but the end of autumn and into spring, they are a bit much. But, it’s cold still in the mornings and evenings in the fall and spring so the short sleeve options are my go-to.
  • The shirts look great and come in many shades so if just worn as a shirt or top layer, it looks great too. (That beige top there is one of my Heattech shirts. Looks great doesn’t it?)

Easy To Pack

  • Not bulky whatsoever.
  • Traveling in the winter can be really difficult when it comes to packing. Clothing is usually thick so you either need a bigger bag or to forgo some items, BUT the great thing about Heattech is that it’s thin so it can fit. You can forgo a couple of layers because you just won’t need them.

For Men, Women, & Children!

  • I really love that it’s a one stop shop for me and my family. There is Heattech for everyone in the family. I used to be worried about our little one being chilly in the winter, but I never do if she’s got some her Heattech on. Whether she wants to wear her dresses or sweatshirts, she’ll be warm enough.

Affordable

  • For as much as I’ve used my Heattech, I think it’s really affordable. Don’t think of it as long johns that you’ll keep hidden or have to keep hidden. Like I said, Heattech shirts can act as more than just base layers.

Where To Buy Heattech

I stop in to Uniqlo and buy what we need for the year and I buy it for everyone. Actually, it’s to note that they last quite a while. I got two Heattech shirts about 8 years ago to start my collection. Liked them so much that the next year I went and got two more. I’m good with mine but that kid of mine just keeps getting bigger year after year. You can get shirts and Heattech leggings too which is especially great for those kids that are running all around outside throughout the season. Worth it to me and it will be to you this winter in Korea, too.
