Suspension Bridges in Korea: Where They Are & How To Find Them

For a few years, it seemed like there was a competition in Korea and every region in South Korea was trying to make their own suspension bridge. Now, suspension bridges dot the country and the cool thing is that some of them are easily accessible and some of them soar between mountains so they all have a bit different feel.

The suspension bridges in Korea get pretty popular in the autumn, but you can get some great views throughout the year. Here are some of the coolest suspension bridges in Korea to find.

How To Plan A Trip In Korea

Here are some things to help you travel in Korea.

International Driver’s License: Driving in Seoul isn’t so great if you’re not used to big city driving, but when it comes to getting out of Seoul, it’s pretty great to hit the road and stop wherever you want to. If you’re a tourist, make sure you have your International Driver’s License. If you’re a resident, make sure you have a local driver’s license if you plan to rent a car as it’s required. You can rent a car with Klook.

T-Money Card/Discover Seoul Pass/Hop On & Hop Off Bus: To get around using the subways or buses or other public transportation options, you’ll need to get a T-Money card. This card allows you to put money on it and scan it at the turnstiles in subways and when you’re getting on and off buses and even works in taxis.

Korea Rail Pass: If you want to get out of Seoul and plan to use the train more than twice, then the Korea Rail Pass is the economical/budget choice you want to have on hand. Grab the card here and just head to the station with your confirmation and it’s as easy as that.

A List of Korean Suspension Bridges

For a few years now regional areas of Korea have been competing to be able to claim that they have the longest suspension bridge in Korea. Year after year, a new one opens that is just a bit longer than the last and they hoist the sign to proclaim they have the longest suspension bridge in the country. The one that now doesn’t have the longest still has their sign up too though so visitors come back from weekends away and say, “hey, I just went across the longest suspension bridge in Korea” when they didn’t really but all because an old sign told them so.

Signs don’t seem to get updated and suspension bridges in Korea keep getting longer. It’s funny and sure, if the sign says so, why not? But actually, they’re not ALL the longest so let’s talk about some of the cool suspension bridges in Korea to check out and we’ll do it in the order of how long they are so there’s no confusion on which is the longest.

Geumgang Suspension Bridge (금강구름다리)

Length: 50 meters

Daedunsan Provincial Park is a popular autumn hiking destination in Korea and that’s when pictures of the Geumgang Suspension Bridge really take over Instagram. Not a long suspension bridge at only 50 meters across, it hangs 81 meters up between Imgeumgbawi Rock and Ipseokdae Pedestal and offers some pretty epic photos so it’s still completely worthy of a visit even though it’s the shortest suspension bridge on this list. The site is a fun one to get to with a cable car ride, or a hike, there’s a steep staircase and then the suspension bridge before you.

By Public Transportation: Catch a KTX train from Seoul Station and get off at Gyeryong Station. From there, it’s just a 40 minute bus ride.
Hours: The bridge is open whenever you get there. The cable car is only open from 9:00am ~ 6:00pm

Chuam Suspension Bridge (추암 출렁다리)

Length: 72 meters

Another super short suspensionb ridge, this suspension bridge provides a nice respite and walk from the gorgeous seaside nearby. The sunrise is stunning, and though it tends to get hot, you have a grand beach beckoning for you to take a deep dive into its salty waters.

If you’re a fan of sculptures, there’s a park for that as well. You could say you came for the bridge but stayed for the swimming and sculptures. This is an ideal suspension bridge for the people that don’t want to hike to one but like a bridge they can get to in less than 10 minutes. By Public Transportation: Catch a KTX train from Seoul Station and get off at Donghae Station. From there, it’s just a 10 minute taxi to Chuam Beach.
Hours: 9:00 AM-8:00 PM but during the summer season, the bridge is open from 6:00 AM-10:00 PM

Songdo Beach, Busan, Korea: Songdo Yonggung Suspension Bridge

Songdo Yonggung Suspension Bridge (송도 용궁 구름다리)

Length: 127 meters

After taking the Songdo Cable Car and being whisked across the blue ocean waters below, step off into Amnam Park where you can find the Songdo Yonggung Suspension Bridge that now allows pedestrians to make their way from the mainland out to nearby Dongseom Island. The bridge goes out and then circles around the island before coming back up again.

By Cable Car: Obviously, the most fun way to get to the suspension bridge would be via the Busan Air Cruise. The bridge is just down a flight of steps and there are plenty of signs to get you there. Just follow your way down and across and then back up if you’ll be taking the cable car back across again.
By Public Transportation: If you won’t be riding the cable car, you can take bus 7 that can be found at the bus stop outside of Jagalchi Subway Station, exit 1. You’ll find the bus stop after walking about 250 meters from the station. Get off at Amnam Park Stop and walk into the mountain about 5 minutes. Follow signs to get to the suspension bridge.
Days: Closed on the first and third Mondays of the month, New Year’s Day, and Chuseok.
Hours: March – September: 9:00am ~ 6:00pm; October – February: 9:00am ~ 5:00pm

Gamaksan Suspension Bridge (감악산 출렁다리)

Length: 150 meters

The Gamaksan Suspension Bridge spans 150 meters across Silmari Valley (설마리) and was the longest suspension bridge in Korea for a hot minute. It was opened in the autumn of 2016 and was the longest for just over a year. While it’s not the LONGEST anymore, the Gamaksan Suspension Bridge is substantial and pretty awe inspiring. The official name of the bridge is actually “Gloucester Heroes Bridge” as it is dedicated to the 1st Battalion belonging to the Gloucester Regiment of the British Army who fought in the Korean War.

Gamaksan rises 675 meters above sea level and is often described as the ‘closest mountain to the DMZ’ which may not be completely accurate but it is probably the most popular one to hike near the DMZ. Do be aware, that due to the ease of access, there may be numerous people depending on the season. Autumn is a crowded time. While we were able to get up in just 10 minutes without any line or wait, I did have a friend go in the autumn a couple years ago and had to wait on the same path for THREE hours so apparently when it’s packed… It’s really packed.

By Bus: To get to this one, just head on the dark blue subway line to Deokjeong Station and then outside of the station and across the street take bus 25-1 which will get you there in an hour.

Sogeumsan Suspension Bridge Trail (소금산 출렁다리), Wonju, Gangwon-do, Korea

Sogeumsan Suspension Bridge (원주 소금산 출렁다리)

Length: 200 meters

With the color scheme of a children’s playground, the Sogeumsan Suspension Bridge makes you feel young again, with each step across it feeling lighter than the last. At a length of around 200 meters, it used to be the longest of its kind.

Now, it’s around 50 meters short of that title, but still impressive nonetheless. To reach it and the lush and tranquil jungle that surrounds it, you must walk the path of 1,000 steps—just kidding; it’s actually only 600. But trust me, it’s worth the journey even without crossing the bridge.

By Bus: Take the Bus by Samsan Station, then ride for 53 minutes (26 stops) until you reach Wol-Un. It’s a 15-minute walk from there.
Hours: May – October: 9:00am ~ 6:00pm; November – April: 9:00am ~ 5:00pm
Days: Closed the 1st and 3rd Mondays of every month, Seollal (the Lunar New Year) and Chuseok (the Korean Thanksgiving)

Majang Suspension Bridge (마장 현수교)

Length: 220 meters

This bridge, like many before it, has been labeled the longest suspension bridge in the country. I’m not sure if you noticed, but a couple of years ago, it was like there was a sudden race to build the longest suspension bridge and numerous bridges were unveiled with each being just a bit longer than the previous one.

To get to this one, head to Wonju Terminal. From there, take a bus about 20 minutes to the attraction. At the bottom, there is a whole street area of small restaurants and food stands. There’s a gorgeous river area right behind it where you can picnic or walk around for a bit.

By Subway/Bus: From Gupabal Subway Station, go out of exit 4 and find the bus stop #12113 and take bus 333. The bus will take about 46 minutes. You’ll want to get off at bus stop #31907 which is Gisan 2-ri Village. From there you’ll need to walk a bit in the same direction that the bus was headed but it’s not too far. There are cafes and restaurants surrounding the lake and you can spot the suspension bridge once you get up to the top of the dam.

Jecheon Oksunbong Suspension Bridge (제천 옥순봉 출렁다리)

Length: 222 meters

Walk along a wooden deck installed at the edge of Chungjuho Lake to get to this beautiful suspension bridge. Not a difficult walk, this is a good suspension bridge for the height averse. It has been a nationwide attraction since its grand opening in October 2021.

The breeze is strong and the fresh scent of the lake is unforgettable. Speaking of lakes, you can check out Cheongpungho Lake as well as Oksunbong Peak and Yongdampokpo Falls while you are there. You are in Jecheon, now, after all. Why not see all it has to offer?

Gimcheon, Gyeongsanbuk-do, Korea: Buhang Dam Suspension Bridge

Buhang Dam Suspension Bridge (부항댐 출렁다리)

Length: 256 meters

Gimcheon is a city in Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea and is easily accessible via the KTX train line that connects the capital city of Seoul to the coastal city of Busan.The Buhang Dam Suspension Bridge, which was completed in December 2018 at a whopping 256 meters in length!

As you walk up from the main road or from the parking lot if you’re driving, the suspension bridge entrance is what you’ll find first on your right. Take the path as it will lead out and around and then up to an awesome zip wire attraction.

The Buhang Dam Suspension Bridge, though long, is NOT the tallest out there and is actually easily accessible via a wooden boardwalk that connects to the nearby road. This means families with small children and even strollers and wheelchairs can get across this bridge easily.

The suspension bridge is a planked so for those that don’t like the glass floor type, no need to worry. There ARE just two 2ft by 2 ft square cut-out glass sections in the middle, but they are easy to avoid if you don’t want that view down through your feet.

By Bus: The easiest way to get here is to hop on the KTX and get off at Gimcheon Train Station. Just across the street from the station is the bus terminal. Get onto bus 885-1 which will take you to the foot of the road that heads up.

Yedangho Suspension Bridge (예당호 출렁다리)

Length: 402 meters

Opened in 2019, as the longest suspension bridge in Korea at the time, there is some beautiful scenery here. Take in the sculpture park around the lake and then stand on the white suspension bridge and listen to the grand musical fountain.

The fountain is the widest in the nation, hitting as many superlatives as they can, and shoots jets of water up 110 meters into the air. The fountain show lasts for 20 minutes and there are bright LED lights completing a very exciting performance.

Tapjeongho Suspension Bridge (탑정호 출렁다리)

Length: 600 meters

Nonsan Tapjeongho Suspension Bridge spans over 600 meters, stretching over a wide lake in Nonsan. During the day you get a view of the vast sky that seems to span out infinitely. It’s simply stunning and breathtaking, becoming even more captivating after nightfall. The alluring boundary is colored like something akin to Jupiter. With the mountain in the background, it’s almost like you are on another planet. Then there’s the aspect of actually walking across this event horizon. It’s a spectacular walk.

Gaudo Mangho Suspension Bridge (가우도 망호 출렁다리)

Length: 716 meters

Gaudo Island is the only populated island in the Gangjinman Bay area. If you want to visit the island, you can get there via the Gaudo Mangho Suspension Bridge. From there walk on the culture and eco trail called ‘Hamgge Hae Trail’ which is 2.5km long and takes visitors along the coastline. Look out over the mountains and the sea and enjoy the view.
