The Clarifying Mask is a peel-off exfoliating mask formulated with traditional Korean herbs including Solomon’s Seal powder (which provides antioxidant protection and Vitamin C), Korean honeysuckle extract, and ginseng root extract. Together these ingredients work to promote dead skin cell turnover, brighten skin tone, and nourish while the mask is on.
It’s gentle enough to use regularly while still delivering noticeable results, which isn’t something most peel-off masks can claim.
A Honey-like Texture
The Clarifying Mask has a thick syrup-like texture that’s aptly described as honey-like on the website. The texture is appealing just like honey. It’s a bit sticky but dries perfectly. Polyvinyl alcohol, a common component in peel-off masks, is present, but the potential negative effects are expertly balanced with the addition of glycerin for hydration. My skin didn’t feel excessively dry at all after use but actually felt very supple and soft after I peeled off the mask… in one piece I should add.
Herbal Aromas
The herbal scent, a signature of Sulwhasoo products, might be challenging for those averse to such strong aromas. Personally, I find the ginseng scent exquisite, evoking a sense of healthiness and an homage to the Sulwhasoo holistic approach to beauty and skincare, but it’s certainly not subtle.
How To Use The Peel Off Mask
Apply a generous, even layer to the face over toner or emulsion. The brand recommends applying over a toner or emulsion specifically, it adds a layer of hydration between the mask and the skin.
I tested it both ways: directly after cleansing and applied over toner. The results were consistent either way. If you already use a toner, apply after it; if not, apply after cleansing. Both work.
Leave on for approximately 30 minutes while the mask dries completely. Drying time matters, don’t rush this. A mask that isn’t dried completely and uniformly won’t peel cleanly. If you get it right though, that peel is so satisfying.
The Satisfying Peel-Off Ritual
This is the best part. Once dry, the mask peels off in one piece. That sounds like a small thing until you’ve used enough peel-off masks that come off in fragments, require scrubbing, and eventually just get washed off in defeat. The Sulwhasoo Clarifying Mask peels off clean, whole, and satisfyingly. After peeling, the skin underneath feels immediately softer.
The Final Sulwhasoo Clarifying Mask Review
Sulwhasoo’s Clarifying Mask exceeded my expectations. If you’ve never tried Sulwhasoo before, this is a great introductory product to go for. This peel off mask provides a gentle exfoliating peel that is so fun to peel off. It’s suitable for most skin types, with the only caveat being potential allergies to specific ingredients.
