Welcome to the ultimate Hallyu playground in Seoul, Korea. HiKR Ground (하이커 그라운드) is an immersive tourism space opened by the Korea Tourism Organization, oh and I should mention it’s one cool and FREE thing to do in Seoul. It is a vibrant fusion of K-Pop, K-Drama, and Korean culture, designed especially for the younger generation to have a blast and learn more about Korean tourism.

I’ve been back to HiKR Ground more times than I can count at this point. I’ve gone on my own, I’ve taken my daughter, and I regularly bring study tour groups through when they’re in Seoul, usually at least a couple of times a year, since KTO changes up the exhibits and pop-up programs often enough that it’s genuinely worth a repeat visit.

Basic Info

Address: 40 Cheonggyecheon-ro, Jung-gu, Seoul (서울특별시 중구 청계천로 40 한국관광공사 서울센터)

Directions: Walk straight out of Jonggak Subway Station, exit 5 and after crossing over the Cheonggyecheon Stream, turn right and you’ll see HiKR Ground on your left. Or, take a bus and get off at the Euljiro 1(il)-ga Gwanggyo stop (02-246) for a 3-minute walk, or the Woori Bank Jongno Branch stop (02-139) for a 4-minute walk. If you’re doing the Seoul City Tour Bus, get off at the Jonggak, Street of Youth stop.

Hours: Floors 1-4: Tuesday – Sunday: 10:00am ~ 8:00pm; Floor 5: Every day (Tourist Info Center & Cafe Knotted): 10:00am ~ 8:00pm

What Is HiKR Ground?

HiKR Ground is a free, five-floor Hallyu experience center run by the Korea Tourism Organization right along Cheonggyecheon Stream in downtown Seoul. Expect K-pop music video studios, Korean street-culture exhibits, rotating regional travel showcases, and a massive media art wall, all wrapped into a visit that takes an hour or less and slots easily into almost any Seoul itinerary.

Walk in and find the right floor and you’ll literally see everyone dancing to their favorite K-pop song and creating their own K-pop videos for TikTok. Step into the Hiker Street exhibit and you’ll find Korean alley culture recreated indoors, coin karaoke booths, graffiti walls, and photo booths included. See some art, take a seat, enjoy your visit to Seoul with this cool stop.

What To See: Floor By Floor

Launched in July 2022 in what used to be the K-Style Hub, HiKR Ground was built to appeal to the younger generation of travelers coming to Seoul. The floors have shifted around a bit since it opened (more on that below), so here’s what’s currently there.

1st Floor: HiKR Wall

As you step into HiKR Ground, you’re greeted by a warm “Hi” with a touch of purple, perfect for group photos, or if you’re like us and looking for a place to take a break from the summer heat, you can take a seat.

The first floor is home to the iconic “HiKR Wall,” a massive media mural (32 meters long) showcasing digital art and video clips of Korea’s top tourist spots, along with Korean tourism videos submitted by global Hallyu fans. You can also find brochures for the entire building here, and the Korea Medical Tourism Business Center is located on this floor too, worth knowing if you’re planning any part of your trip around medical tourism.

2nd Floor: K-Pop Ground

If you’ve ever dreamed of becoming a K-Pop superstar, the second floor, K-Pop Ground, is where your dreams take flight. While it wasn’t my particular dream, my daughter sure enjoyed it. This floor boasts interactive K-Pop experience zones set up like real music video sets (subway platforms and coin laundry rooms among them), plus the K-pop Lounge, a dedicated Hallyu event space. You can create your own K-pop music video using the XR Live Studio, featuring dozens of virtual backgrounds.

Basically, there are computer screens near each background and you can choose the lighting, you can choose the song, you can choose it all. Maybe one of your friends prefers to be a producer, well this will be your jam. Oh, and there’s a wall of accessories you can put on too.

3rd & 4th Floor: Hiker Street, Hiker Tower, and Local Ground

This is the part of the building that’s changed the most since HiKR Ground first opened, so if you visited back in 2022 or 2023, don’t expect it to look the same.

The 3rd floor is now home to Hiker Street, a “Dailycation” themed zone built around everyday Korean alley culture: think graffiti alleys, coin karaoke rooms, and photo booths, brought to life with interactive AI and AR content. Do Ho Suh’s piece “North Wall” (2022) still hangs here, a striking work from one of Korea’s most well-known contemporary artists.

Running vertically through the 3rd and 4th floors is Hiker Tower, a large vertical media structure that ties the two levels’ content together visually.

The 4th floor is currently Local Ground, a rotating exhibition space dedicated to travel stories from around Korea. It changes with the seasons, so what’s on display when you visit is genuinely a bit of a surprise, and part of the fun. This is also the floor that used to house the wellness tourism exhibit (Korean tea, forest healing, traditional medicine) when HiKR Ground first opened.

5th Floor: Hiker Lounge and Tourist Information Center

After an exciting journey through HiKR Ground, take a well-deserved break on the fifth floor, or start with a break up here like we did. Hiker Lounge offers a peaceful retreat with a view of the beautiful Cheonggyecheon Stream and downtown Seoul.

Here, you’ll find the Tourist Information Center, where you can plan the rest of your Korea trip with helpful staff on hand, and grab some free books and reading materials as unique souvenirs. Cafe Knotted is here too if you want a drink and something sweet after the exhibits (this used to be a Knotted Donut kiosk, same brand, it’s just branded as the cafe now).

Unlike the rest of the building, the 5th floor’s Tourist Information Center and cafe are open daily, year-round, even on the Mondays when floors 1 through 4 are closed.

The Free Docent Tour (And Why I Actually Use It With My Groups)

FYI: There’s a free, regularly scheduled docent tour, and I use it constantly when I bring study tour groups through Seoul.

The regular Korean-language docent tour runs Tuesday through Sunday at 10:30 and 15:30, and takes about 40 minutes. If you need it in English, Chinese, or Japanese, those tours run on an irregular basis, and you’ll want to call ahead (02-729-9497~9) or email [email protected] to check what’s scheduled and confirm availability, since it depends on staffing and demand that day.

For a group visit, this is a great free resource in downtown Seoul. It turns what could be a “walk around and look at screens” experience into an actual guided introduction to the exhibits, which matters more than you’d think for visitors who aren’t already steeped in Hallyu context.

Is HiKR Ground worth it?

Well, it’s free first of all so it’s a bit of an odd question. But maybe, you’re wondering if it’s worth your time in a busy Seoul itinerary. Being right downtown and just steps from the iconic Cheonggyecheon Stream, it wouldn’t be difficult to squeeze in. The entire space takes an hour or less to enjoy in my opinion.

If you have kids and are doing a lot of walking, this is a great space to take a seat, rest a bit, just enjoy the surroundings, have a drink, or let them do some dancing. Of course, all of those things are good for adults as well.

Is HiKR Ground closed on Mondays?

Yes. Floors 1 through 4 are closed every Monday. The 5th floor, which has the Tourist Information Center and Cafe Knotted, stays open daily year-round, including Mondays.

Do I need to book the K-pop video studio in advance?

No, it’s walk-in.

How long should I budget for a visit?

An hour or less covers the whole building comfortably.

Is HiKR Ground good for kids?

Yes. My own daughter has enjoyed it, and it’s an easy, air-conditioned, free stop to let kids move around and play while adults get a break too.

Is there a HiKR location at the airport?

Yes. HiKR Station is located at Incheon International Airport, Terminal 1, in the Transportation Center on Basement 1, across from Burger King. It’s a smaller, photo-and-video-focused version of HiKR Ground, open daily from 10:00 to 19:00.

Can I take photos and videos inside?

Yes, take all of the photos, and videos and enjoy your time there.
