Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) Seoul: What To See, Do, and Know Before You Visit

Last Updated on April 3, 2026

The Dongdaemun Design Plaza (동대문디자인플라자), often referred to as DDP by locals, is one of those buildings that stops people mid-stride. It is a definitive architectural must-see in the capital city of Korea. The sweeping aluminum curves, the lawns that rise up and fold over the roofline, the way the whole structure seems to have grown from the ground rather than built on it.

Seoul was even named the World Design Capital in 2010, and DDP is a significant reason why. The iconic building is actually the world’s largest atypical architecture. Often the home of artistic exhibitions, like TeamLab, but also home to Seoul’s fashion week, there is always something to see… if the building itself isn’t enough.

Dongdaemun can feel overwhelming on a first visit. Numerous buildings, dozens entrances, fashion malls open until dawn. DDP is the best place to start. Here’s everything you need to know.

The Architect Who Changed Seoul’s Skyline

The Dongdaemun Design Plaza was designed by Zaha Hadid, the British-Iraqi architect who became the first woman to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the field’s highest honor, in 2004. Hadid was known for what she called “parametric design” buildings that appear to have no straight lines, no right angles, no conventional geometry. DDP is one of her most significant completed works.

The numbers are striking: the exterior uses more than 45,133 aluminum panels, and no two panels are identical. The building’s surface area covers 86,574 square metres. The curving, undulating form was designed to flow seamlessly from the ground-level landscape into the building itself, which is why the lawns appear to rise up and over the roof, blurring the boundary between structure and surroundings.

Before the DDP was built, the site was home to Dongdaemun Stadium, constructed in 1925 during the Japanese colonial period. During construction of the DDP, archaeologists discovered remnants of the old city walls of the Joseon Dynasty buried beneath the stadium, those ruins are now visible in the outdoor Dongdaemun History & Culture Park that wraps around the building. The past and the radically contemporary exist within meters of each other here, which gives the whole complex an unusual depth.

Hadid passed away in 2016, but DDP stands as one of her most photographed and most visited works globally. The building opened in 2014 and has barely left a “best of Seoul” list since.

Things To Do At The Dongdaemun Design Plaza

There are events, exhibitions, pop-ups, restaurants, and a remarkable design shop to discover at DDP, so you should go more than once if you can, because what’s on changes constantly. Here’s where to start.

Step Inside An Exhibition That Will Stay With you

DDP is home to two art halls, an exhibition hall, the Yigansumun Exhibition Hall, and the Dongdaemun History Museum, all within one complex. There are art exhibitions, fashion exhibitions, design retrospectives, and immersive experiences running almost continuously throughout the year and the quality is consistently high.

One thing worth knowing about the interior: the structure can be disorienting. There are no windows to signal what level you’re on or which direction you’re facing. One of the most interesting exhibition spaces is a long, winding corridor that follows the curve of the building, but you’ll be surprised where you come out when you follow it. Stop at the information center for a map, and open any door that’s unlocked. That’s genuinely the best advice for navigating the inside of DDP.

Check the DDP website before you visit to see what’s currently showing. Lines can be long on opening days for popular exhibitions, so booking in advance is wise when tickets are available.

See Seoul Differently After Dark

DDP is one of the finest night photography locations in Seoul, and one of the most forgiving, the smooth aluminum surface catches and reflects light beautifully from every angle, and the surrounding park provides natural vantage points for wide shots.

The best approach: arrive around sunset and stay through the first hour of full darkness. The sky gradient behind the building during the golden hour adds depth that pure night shots don’t have. The elevated walkway on the Eulji-ro side gives a clear wide-angle view of the whole facade. The sunken courtyard area near the history museum is a less obvious position that most visitors miss entirely and offers a completely different perspective on the building’s scale. This is one of the best places to visit at night in Seoul.

SeouLight Will Stop You In Your Tracks

SeouLight is worth its own mention beyond just the photography angle because the experience is bigger than a photo opportunity. The show runs multiple times a year with seasonal programs and each bring different visuals and music. The scale is the thing: 220 meters of curved aluminum covered in moving light, with the audio surrounding you as you stand in the square.

Go at night, get close enough to feel the music, and stay for the full programme. It runs for around 20 minutes and most people watch it at least twice. It’s completely free and one of those Seoul experiences that feels like it should cost something but doesn’t.

Bring the Kids To DiKi DiKi

The Design Playground, called DiKi DiKi, is a children’s sensory experience zone inside DDP that is one of the better indoor kids’ activities in central Seoul. The architecture of the building lends itself well to it: climbing structures, crawl-through zones, creative design challenges, and activities that are interactive rather than passive. My daughter has had great fun there with her friends.

  • Admission: Children: W15,000 for two hours; Guardians: W5,000 for two hours
  • Hours: Wednesday – Sunday: 10:30am ~ 5:30pm
  • Notes: Children should be between the ages of 2 and 9 for this playspace.

Find BtheB For Beauty Innovation and Samples

Just off Oulim Square, BtheB is a beauty complex and culture space where Korean beauty brands set up interactive pop-ups, product demonstrations, and sample stations. The brands rotate continuously so it’s worth stopping in every time you visit.

If you’re interested in K-beauty and want to try products before committing to buying them, this is one of the better free sample opportunities in Seoul. You’ll usually leave with a bag of things to test.

Eat Something in the B1 Hall

While most of the larger structures are spaces for exhibitions, there is a hall of food shops. If you do arrive to an exhibition but see there is a wait, or are hungry as soon as you leave, this is the best thing to do for food.

This hall is easiest found when you’re down on the B1 floor of the structure. With the large structure behind you and the historical remains in the center, you’ll see an entrance toward the main Dongdaemun road. Head in to find some food. I’ve had pizza, pork cutlet, and coffee down there. Good for a quick bite whenever you need it.

Lose Yourself at the DDP Design Store

The DDP Design Store is one of the best places in Seoul to buy a souvenir that isn’t generic. Working with domestic Korean design firms, the store stocks products that take Korean cultural references and rework them for contemporary life. You can find ceramics, stationery, home goods, accessories, and small art objects. The quality is consistently high and the things for sale here are different from what you’ll find anywhere else.

Pretend You’re In a Korean Drama

DDP has appeared in more Korean dramas than almost any other Seoul landmark with the likes of You Who Came From The Stars, Producer, She Was Pretty, Record of Youth, Love Alarm, My First First Love, Perfume, Are You Human, and Fated To Love You among many others. Once you know what DDP looks like, you’ll start spotting it constantly.

If you’re a drama fan, this is your spot. The exterior and the interior corridors both appear frequently. Pick a scene, find the angle, and recreate it.

Take a Break From Dongdaemun’s Shopping Marathon

Dongdaemun is one of Seoul’s most intense shopping districts with Migliore, APM Place, Doota, and several other fashion malls directly across the street from DDP. Did I mention that most stay open well into the early hours? DDP is the ideal decompression spot in the middle of a long shopping day: benches, open space, interesting things to look at, and no one trying to sell you anything outside the building.

If someone in your group isn’t into shopping, DDP is the place to send them while the rest of the group browses. It’s never crowded unless a major exhibition is opening, the architecture keeps things interesting, and there’s enough to see for a couple of hours without spending a single won.
