The Seoul Derby: Autumn Edition Recap

The Seoul Derby just keeps getting bigger and better each time I host it. Last year, I hosted it just once and that was the plan this year. However, there were just too many people interested and I was happy to host again if Arielle from Soju4Two was down so hosted again we did. The first one was in the beginning of the summer, as they usually are. If you missed that one AND this one, then get ready next spring and be on the look out!

The Seoul Derby: Seoul Scavenger Hunt October 2018

This time around we rounded up the teams at the Malli-dong Plaza near Seoullo. It’s one of my favorite spots with an installation that is often missed by people as they pass by because it goes down into the earth. If you don’t know how it goes, here’s a quick brief.

Teams rock up and I hand them a list of scavenger hunt clues. There are mission stops around the city that they have to hit to get maximum points and these mission stops keep them on a route so they can find the ending location in style.. and in time. While they’re running around, they find things like people in Hanboks, couples in matching clothes and other location based clues are included as well. It’s just basically a fun way to see the city.

Twelve teams rocked up to race around downtown Seoul. There was a team of solo sign-ups that banned together and rocked the race. There were go-getters, a family hauling kids that were bouncing wherever they could and everyone was in it to win it.

My favorite part about this event is to see how the teams read the clues and find out what they come up with. Some are pretty straight forward. They have to find a certain statue here or a mural there. Some though really seem to get people excited.

The top teams this time really went all out for finding as many different modes of transportation as they could. From the normal ones like cars, subways and trains they went all the way to skateboards, elevators, escalators, forklifts and really just about anything with wheels. That’s the way to win though… figure out which clues you can rack up the points on and go go go with it.

For a really good idea of what this event is like and all the fun that can be had, check out this awesome video that Arielle made.

There were some great sponsors including CheeseMania a great foreign owned establishment in the Hongdae area serving up cheesy eats and salads too. Another great sponsor was Dark Side of Seoul who has some creepy tours that are a definite experience not to be missed here in Seoul. Aqua Planet was on hand again and is still one of my favorite aquariums near Seoul. Huggers 허거스 is a great establishment serving delicious eats over in the Itaewon area and Sprout-Natural Healthy Whole Food Service delivers healthy eats straight to your door after you place your order.

The sponsors list was just amazing and also included some tour providers including Seoul Pass which is a great site that lets you get tickets to some of those must see spots and events here in Seoul and around the country. For this event they were giving tickets out to a show called Fireman! Tour 08 – Foreigner Tours is THE tour company to check out if you’re looking for a weekend away and quite an adventure. Another great spot that will deliver healthy vegetarian eats to you when you don’t feel like cooking is Spoon Me. And when you’re ready to get some professional photos taken, be sure to check out Maitri Shah. And if you need an outfit to wear for that photoshoot, don’t miss Kkot Gu Reum.

For the missions, teams had to find fellow blogger Shelley Lee from Travel-Stained and her partner Michelle and had to try their hand at a map of Korea… could you fill it in? Next they had to get themselves over to Tapgol Park to find two of the ladies, divide and conquer with some chopsticks and candy.

From there they headed over to Paperstreet, the hosts for the ending party from the spring Seoul Derby. Teams drank and ate and then raced over to Urban Space in Myeongdong to throw some balls in the ball pit and find out who won!

Hope the teams had as much fun as Arielle and I did hosting!
