Yeongpyeongsa Temple: Visit When The Flowers Bloom In Sejong

I’d heard inklings of a beautiful mountainside in Sejong covered in Siberian chrysanthemums and decided to check it out. We had enjoyed an autumn road trip south and decided to stay the night in the area but wanted to see this mountain of flowers.

Pulling in after sunset, we were lucky enough to see Yeongpyeongsa Temple (영평사) on Janggunsan Mountain just before it got too dark but just in time for their annual Siberian Chrysanthemum Festival.

A Traditional Temple In A Modern City

While much of Sejong City is known to be modern, high-tech, and well-planned, there are still traditional neighborhoods and sites like Yeongpyeongsa Temple. Yeongpyeongsa Temple has six traditional buildings and three hermitages. Step up to Samseonggak Hall, Jeokmukdang Hall, Seolseondang Hall, and Sammyeongseonwon Hall and an underground meditation room.

According to Feng Shui, the mountain is a perfect location for a temple because it is shaped like a dragon curled along the Geumgang River. Although the mountain is small, in terms of feng shui, it is said to be a great place with strong energy.

This temple is well-known for featuring many flowers not just in the autumn, but from spring through summer as well. There are azaleas and royal azaleas in the spring, plantain lilies and hydrangeas in the summer, and of course the most popular view is of the Siberian chrysanthemums in the autumn.

The Siberian Chrysanthemums Festival

Autumn at Yeongpyeongsa is a spectacle not to be missed, thanks to the Siberian Chrysanthemums Festival. While we were only there for the mountainside covered in flowers, the full experience at the festival includes flower tea tastings, photo exhibitions, contests, concerts, and performances. I love a good local townie style event, and this would be a good one to look out for if you like flowers as much as I do.

A Zen Experience

Like many temples in Korea, Yeongpyeongsa Temple also has a templestay program. The name Yeongpyeongsa literally means eternal peace. Join the program to learn temple etiquette, learn to eat, walk with a monk, drink tea, rest, and meditate. It’s a great way to clear your mind. Learn what to expect from a templestay program and then find one to join near you. There are so many great experiences.
