Teterot Salon: Where To Buy A Stylish Modern Hanbok In Person Or Online
Last Updated on June 11, 2025
If you’re wandering the maze-like alleyways of Ikseon-dong, one of Seoul’s most photogenic neighborhoods, you’ll eventually stumble upon something special among the rows of Ikseon-dong cafes and restaurants: Teterot Salon (때때롯살롱). Not just a boutique, it’s a modern take on Korean heritage, and one of the best spots to pick up a stylish modern Hanbok in Seoul. (Bonus for those abroad though, Teterot Salon also has an online shop!)
On the hunt for a new modern Hanbok to add to my collection, I already have three and one traditional one, I had heard about this shop from friends and wanted to visit for myself. Whether you’re looking for a piece of Korean fashion to take abroad with you, or partake in traditional Korean ceremonies like jesa with your family as I do, the modern Hanbok is a staple that can go from work to ceremony and day to night. They’re beautiful pieces of culture and heritage and they’re wearable. What’s better?

Why Teterot Salon Stands Out
Sitting in a restored Hanok in Ikseon-dong, a district where 1930s architecture meets Seoul’s newtro trend (new + retro = newtro), it’s the perfect place for Teterot Salon. The store feels like a gallery, not just a retail space. There’s a sense of craftsmanship and calm amidst the various styles of modern Hanboks that are both whimsical and playful on one side while utilitarian and sporty on the other.

What does Teterot mean?
“Ttettteot (때때옷)” means the first clothes you wear in life, and “Ttettero (때때로)” means sometimes. Add Salon, a nod to European art gatherings, and you start to understand the brand’s mindset. It’s all about intentional, elevated design that connects the past and present.

Different Styles For Different People
Teterot Salon’s mission is clear, reinterpret the Hanbok with a modern eye, keeping the traditional spirit while making it wearable for everyday life. Their pieces have clean lines, muted and sophisticated colors if you’re looking for something that is work-appropriate, or florals that suit the spring and summer seasons when you’re out and about, and the materials are surprisingly soft.
From wrap skirts to wrap dresses, there are also t-shirts with beautiful Korean-inspired designs. There’s something for everyone whether you’re looking for comfortable weekend-wear or an upscale look for dinner out. Did I mention they have skirts with pockets too? That’s not usually something found on modern Hanboks.

A Brief History of the Hanbok
The Hanbok is Korea’s traditional attire, with roots going back to the Three Kingdoms period (1st century BC). It was originally everyday wear for Koreans, evolving through the Joseon Dynasty into the more formal attire we now often associate with holidays like Chuseok and the Lunar New Year as well as events like weddings.
Modern Hanboks started gaining popularity in the 2010s as designers looked for ways to make the traditional styles relevant again. Now, they’re not just cultural artifacts, they’re fashion statements.
Brands like Teterot Salon are leading the charge in that movement, helping a new generation of Koreans reconnect with heritage in a fresh, wearable way, and introducing these garments to an international audience at the same time.

What Makes Modern Hanbok Worth It
Let’s talk practicality. Traditional Hanboks are beautiful and I love mine, but they’re not exactly convenient. The skirt is luxuriously large and there are layers upon layers. While perfect for a formal event, not so great for day to day. Modern Hanboks flip that script.

At Teterot Salon, you’ll find breathable fabrics, stretchable waistsbands, and silhouettes you can move easily in. The looks are inspired by classic jeogori jackets and chima skirts, but designed to be part of your daily wardrobe. I ended up buying a beautiful pink skirt and a jeogori-style top that’s ideal for summer months.
Speaking of sizing, they do have a variety of size options, including waists that are elastic too, which is great. I did notice SOME “Free Size” skirts which in Korea is supposed to be one-size-fits-all, but really, it never does and in actuality means small or extra-small. I commented to staff on how it’d be great to see those same styles created into more than just small, so I’m crossing my fingers they expand those lines.

From Tourist To Local, There’s Always A Time To Wear A Hanbok
If you’re visiting Korea, a modern Hanbok is both a meaningful and stylish souvenir to take home. It hits the sweet spot between tradition and modern style and is something you’d actually be able to use. Or, if you’re like me and either have Korean roots, or a Korean family, you’ll find so many uses for a modern Hanbok that is a beautiful way to stay connected to the culture without compromising comfort and personal style.
