Sulwhasoo Perfecting Line Review: Veil Primer, Tinted Cream & Cushion Airy

I’ve been using Sulwhasoo for over a decade now, and it wasn’t until I hit my later thirties, heading into my forties, that I really understood why so many Korean women swear by this brand for the long haul. I’ve seen Sulwhasoo products sit on my mother-in-laws bureau for years. I’ve written before about how much I love the First Care Activating Serum VI and my consistent trips to the gorgeous House of Sulwhasoo in Bukchon, but until recently, I’d never actually tried anything from their makeup lines. I’ve always been strictly a skincare girl with this brand.
That changed when I signed up for Sulwhasoo’s supporters program here in Seoul this summer (full transparency, that’s how I ended up with these three products to test). Sulwhasoo builds its name on skincare, so when the brand puts out a base makeup lineup, it’s fair to wonder if it can actually perform as makeup, or if it’s just skincare wearing a foundation’s clothes. I was interested to see if their foundations were as luxe as their skincare. Sulwhasoo’s Perfecting line is a base makeup collection built with 78% to 85% skincare ingredients, designed to function as makeup while actively caring for the skin underneath it, which is really what we want these days. I put three of their newer Perfecting line products through real, everyday wear, testing: the Perfecting Veil Primer, the Perfecting Tinted Cream, and the Perfecting Cushion Airy. Which do you think was my favorite?

What To Know About Sulwhasoo’s Perfecting Line
If you’re new to Sulwhasoo, it’s one of Korea’s most established luxury beauty houses, built around traditional Korean herbal wisdom, ginseng especially, combined with the brand’s own skincare technology. Everything they make, including their makeup, comes from that same holistic philosophy.
The Perfecting line takes that philosophy and applies it to base makeup, built around two signature elements: plum blossom extract (Sulwhasoo’s motif ingredient, drawn from the flower that blooms even through snow) and the brand’s Jaum Activator, designed to support the skin’s own natural healthy function rather than just sitting on top of it.
All three products lean into that “skin-caring makeup” idea, meaning they’re formulated with a notably high percentage of actual skincare ingredients rather than just pigment, oil, and filler. This is something that more brands have been adopted over the past decade; creating makeup that does more for the skin. The Veil Primer comes in at 85.36% skincare ingredients, and the Tinted Cream at 78.83%. These are some notable numbers.
Perfecting Veil Primer Review

What It Does
The Veil Primer is meant to be the first step after your skincare routine, applied in a thin layer before the rest of your base makeup. It uses Sulwhasoo’s Silk Glaze technology, essentially a coating method designed to blur pores and even out tone without feeling heavy or mask-like. It promises a pore-blurring effect, an all-over tone-up, and 24-hour wear that doesn’t shift into dry, cakey territory by afternoon.
My Thoughts
Confession: before this, I’d never actually used a primer, unless it was a makeup artist applying it on me for an event. It just wasn’t part of my routine. I don’t wear that much makeup to begin with and try to steer clear of added layers if I can. Trying this one finally made me understand what all the fuss is about when it comes to primers though. It smooths and evens out my complexion, and it does a surprisingly good job covering the freckles and spots I have. While I don’t wear makeup every day, I will be making primer a more common part of my makeup bag when I am putting it on.

Perfecting Tinted Cream Review
Type: BB cream/foundation hybrid, SPF40/PA++, shade No.03 Sand
Key ingredients: Plum blossom extract, Jaum Activator, niacinamide, tranexamic acid
What It Does
The Tinted Cream sits in its own category, somewhere between a BB cream and a full foundation. Created with 78.83% skincare ingredients, it promises skin tone correction, blemish coverage, and 24-hour wear, all while still feeling like skincare rather than a mask sitting on top of your face.
My Thoughts
I found the formula for this one on the drier, thicker side straight out of the tube, but it sets fast once applied. It doesn’t have quite the coverage of a full foundation, but the blemish-covering power surprised me, and the staying power held up well, especially as I’m sitting in the middle of a hot and humid Korean summer.
Worn alone, it did feel a little parched on my skin, something I’m more sensitive to now than I was in my twenties. If you have very dry or dehydrated skin, or if you’re finding your skin needs more hydration as you get older like I am, keep this in mind: the formula isn’t lightweight, it’s thick and can feel parched without something hydrating underneath first. I wore shade No.03 Sand which suited my skin really well I found.

Perfecting Cushion Airy Review
Type: Cushion foundation, SPF50+/PA+++, shade 23N1 Sand

What It Does
The newest addition to the line, the Cushion Airy comes packaged in a compact finished with a mother-of-pearl design, very striking on any vanity shelf. True to its name, it’s built to prioritize a lightweight, “airy” feel over heavy, full coverage, powered by the same Jaum Activator technology found in Sulwhasoo’s iconic First Care Activating Serum, the same serum I’ve raved about before (If you’re going to start with one product, start with that one).
My Thoughts
Unlike the Perfecting Tinted Cream which I found a bit dry on my dry skin, the Perfecting Cushion Airy was more dewy and hydrating. It had great coverage, evening out the tone and pigmentation. I went from freckles and sun spots to a very evened tone with out using a ton of the product and I didn’t notice any issues with clogging my pores or looking cakey which I’ve noticed with other cushions in the past. It felt lightweight. Of the three products, this was my favorite and definitely provided that luxe feel I love Sulwhasoo for.

FAQ
Is Sulwhasoo Perfecting Tinted Cream a foundation or a BB cream?
It’s a hybrid. It has more blemish coverage than a typical BB cream but a lighter, more skincare-like feel than a full foundation.
Does the Perfecting Cushion Airy provide full coverage?
It’s designed to be lightweight rather than full-coverage, but it evens out tone and pigmentation well without feeling heavy or cakey.
Do you need a primer before Sulwhasoo cushion or tinted cream?
No, but the Perfecting Veil Primer noticeably smooths and evens the complexion first, and it’s a nice addition if you already use a primer step.
Is Sulwhasoo makeup worth the price?
I think it is. Having used and tested 10+ Sulwhasoo products, they’re definitely doing more for the skin than a lot of brands and feel and look luxe. I definitely have my favorites, but I continue to purchase their products again and again especially as my aging skin needs more than just a cursory skincare routine.
After ten years with this brand, I’ve learned that Sulwhasoo rarely puts out something half-hearted (I was actually just in a testing group for some lip tints they’re testing as well. I’ll be interested to see when they come out and how), and this Perfecting line is no exception. If you’re on the fence about whether Sulwhasoo’s makeup lives up to their skincare reputation, my answer is yes, particularly the Cushion Airy. It’s a base product that feels like a skincare step rather than something you have to remember to take off. I’ll be curious to see where the Perfecting line goes next.
