Where To Stay In Busan: The Best Areas for First-Timers, Families & Beach Lovers

Last Updated on March 3, 2026

Busan is one of my favorite cities in Korea. If I could choose anywhere outside of Seoul to live, it would probably be here. Yes, my husband is from Busan, but even without that connection, this coastal city has something special. Beaches to the south, mountains to the north, fresh seafood everywhere, and neighborhoods that each feel completely different from one another.

If you’re wondering where to stay in Busan, your hotel location matters more here than it does in Seoul. Busan isn’t built around one central downtown. It stretches along the coastline, which means staying on the wrong end of the city can easily add an hour to your commute each day.

The best area to stay in Busan depends on what kind of trip you’re planning.

Busan Neighborhood Quick Guide

  • Gwangalli: A beautiful neighborhood at the center of the city with a beautiful beachside area. This is a great area to stay for families with plenty to do within walking distance.
  • Nampo: One of the most popular neighborhoods for people to stay. It’s busy, bustling, and located in central Busan and home to Jagalchi Fish Market and BIFF Square. You’ll enjoy shopping here.
  • Seo-gu: If you’re headed to Busan with your family, Seo-gu is a great area to stay with plenty to see and do. It’s also a great district for you if it’s your first-time to Busan.
  • Haeundae: Located on the eastern end of the Busan, Haeundae is the center of the action though not the center of the city. Haeundae has the most popular beach in the city. This is the most fashionable hot spot area to stay.
  • Songjeong: On the very eastern end of Busan, this newer area isn’t really recommended for first time visitors because it’s quite out of the way, but if you want a completely different view of Busan, this would be it.

There are a lot of choices when it comes to places to stay in Busan, but I want to keep it fairly simple and straight-forward, so I’ve divided Busan into the popular areas to stay and will point out the best, most unique, and budget friendly places to stay along with the nearby things to see and do.

FAQ

What is the best area to stay in Busan for first time visitors?

For first-time visitors, Haeundae or Seomyeon are usually the safe bets. Haeundae is ideal if you want beach views, easy access to major attractions like the Sky Capsule and Blue Line Park, and plenty of restaurants and hotels in one walkable area. It’s scenic and easy to navigate.

Seomyeon, on the other hand, is more central for transportation. If you plan to explore both the east (Haeundae) and west (Jagalchi, Gamcheon, Taejongdae), staying near Seomyeon Station makes commuting simpler since it connects multiple subway lines.

Is Haeundae too touristy?

Haeundae is definitely the most tourist-heavy area in Busan, especially in summer and during festivals. It’s where you’ll find large hotels, beach events, and the biggest concentration of international visitors.

That said, it’s popular for a reason. The beach is clean and wide, the skyline is dramatic, and major attractions are nearby. If you enjoy lively areas with lots of dining options and activity, you’ll probably love it.

Should I stay near Busan Station?

Staying near Busan Station can be practical if you’re only in the city for a short time or arriving late by KTX. It makes arrival and departure very easy. However, it’s not the most scenic area and doesn’t have the beach atmosphere many people imagine when they think of Busan. You’ll still need to take the subway to reach Haeundae, Gwangalli, or major coastal attractions.

Is Gwangalli better than Haeundae?

It depends on your travel style. Gwangalli is often described as more relaxed and slightly more local. Personally, I like Gwangalli better. It’s less overwhelming than Haeundae.

If you want calmer evenings and beautiful bridge views, choose Gwangalli. If you want iconic Busan and lots happening around you, choose Haeundae.

How many days do you need in Busan?

Most travelers need 2 to 3 days to see the highlights comfortably.

With 2 days, you can cover: Haeundae or Gwangalli Beach, Gamcheon Culture village, Jagalchi Fish Market, Haedong Yonggungsa Temple.

With 3 days, you can add: Taejongdae, Songdo Cable Car, a spa experience like Spa Land, a slower cafe or coastal walk day.
