How To Get Tickets For SEOULDAL
Currently there is no pre-booking option for SEOULDAL. Additionally, considering it can be closed depending on the weather, a pre-booking system may be difficult to establish. Here is how to get tickets for the Seoul balloon ride currently:
- Arrive at the location: In order to get tickets, you must be on location.
- Register for the waitlist: You can’t buy tickets immediately. Instead, there are two kiosks on site that you input your email/phone number into. When it’s your turn, you’ll be contacted to return and enter the building. Note that one person can register for up to 4 people only so if your group is bigger than that, you’ll need other people there on time and in line as well.
- Wait for contact: This can be quick, if you registered early, but it can also be long if not all 30 people can ride due to the weather. Check out the information below for more information on this.
- Enter the safety briefing room: After being contacted, return to the building and enter to purchase the tickets and sign safety forms. Information is in Korean and English.
What To Know About SEOULDAL
SEOULDAL is a 22-meter diameter moon-shaped gas balloon that is tethered to the ground in Yeouido Park. The Seoul Metropolitan Government named this moon-shaped gas balloon SEOULDAL, “dal” means moon in Korean, aiming to make it a major attraction for nighttime tourism in the city, but the views are pretty spectacular during the day when you can ride it.
SEOULDAL is a gas balloon that runs on helium for buoyancy and flies vertically and it is ready for your next aerial adventure. Because it uses non-flammable gas, it is safer than traditional hot air balloons.
How high up does SEOULDAL go?
The ride takes visitors up 130 meters into the sky. It’s now one of the top places in Seoul to take in an observation style view next to N Seoul Tower and Seoul Sky Observatory. If panoramic views are your jam, then this needs to be on your list of things to do in Seoul.
How long does a ride on SEOULDAL last?
A ride on the balloon is 15 minutes, which is plenty of time to take it all in. It takes between 3 and 4 minutes to go up and then there’s ten minutes to gasp in awe, take tons of photos and videos, and then it’s another 3 to 4 minutes to get back down to earth.
How many people can ride on SEOULDAL?
Up to 30 people can take a ride on the balloon at one time. That said, if the winds are high as they were the day we went, they will have less people ride for safety reasons. The day we went, only six to eight people were allowed on at a time. This means that the number of people that can ride throughout the day is greatly effected by the weather, so keep that in mind.
Weather Determinant
As mentioned above, the balloon ride is dependent on the weather. It can be closed all-together when it is too windy or unsafe. They can also decrease the number of people that can ride at once depending on the weather. Why is this important to know? This ride can’t be pre-booked (currently, though they are trying to work on a system that would allow pre-booking) because it can change with the shifts of the wind. While up to 30 people can ride on SEOULDAL, it’s not guaranteed.
Our Experience: The day we went, the winds were a bit high. If all 30 people could have gone on the balloon, we probably would have been on the first or second one up. BUT, since they were limited to eight people per, we ended up not getting on until about the seventh team which meant we were waiting for almost two hours.
Basically, be prepared to stick around, have a picnic, play in the park, and just enjoy the time in the area if you have to wait. On top of that, have a backup plan for things to do in Yeouido or nearby if it’s closed all together.
Is SEOULDAL safe?
Safer than your average hot air balloon, it uses helium, a non-flammable gas and is tethered to the ground. There is also a safety officer that boards with every group and is in constant contact with staff on the ground. This staff member will also give directions to riders in order to keep the balance.
There were a couple of times that our officer asked us to shift here and there to keep the balance as everyone took their turns getting great couple and group photos.
Is SEOULDAL worth it?
Honestly, it absolutely is. I love a fun unique experience and I think this meets my requirements for fun and unique. I drove down to Suwon to try and board their balloon three times and each time was turned away due to the winds, so I was happy to finally have my balloon over the city experience and even better, it was right in downtown Seoul.
