Most likely you’ll land at Incheon International Airport, Seoul’s airport, which is an amazing airport and the 3rd busiest airport in the world for international transit passengers and serves more than 74 million passengers each year. The airport is one of the leading transit airports in the world and honestly, it’s absolutely stunning. That said, it’s not right IN Seoul and that confuses a lot of tourists.

Incheon International Airport is one of the few airports I enjoy getting to early because there is plenty of good food to eat, lovely architecture to see, and it’s a great airport with kids because there are play places to find too. Keep that in mind for your way out.

To the business at hand though, how to get to Seoul from Incheon International Airport. There are quite a few options, so get ready to learn about them all.

My Actual Recommendation, By Situation

If you asked me point blank what to book, here’s honestly how I’d rank it, and it depends almost entirely on the age of your kids and how much you’re carrying.

Private transfer is what we did nearly every time when we flew in from abroad and were headed to our house in Eunpyeong-gu, jet lag and a kid in tow considered, as well as the closest airport bus, just wasn’t that close to our house. If a private transfer isn’t in the budget, though, here’s the order I’d go in.

When our daughter was small enough to need to be carried, especially with jet lag meaning she wasn’t walking at all when we landed, taxis were our go-to. You’re carried right from the taxi stand to the car, no stairs, no transfers, no waiting on a platform with a limp toddler.

Now that she’s around 10, we use the airport buses a lot more. I’d recommend buses next over the train because they’re more direct to more areas of the city, and your baggage stays put underneath the bus the entire ride instead of you managing it yourself.

I actually recommend the train last for most visitors, because there’s more walking, more stairs, and more transferring involved to get from the airport to wherever you’re staying, unless you’re staying right near an exit in a station like Hongdae or Seoul Station itself. That said, I know a lot of tourists still prefer the train because the process itself is easier to understand than figuring out bus routes.

Meeting Someone At The Airport? Read This First

This trips up a lot of Americans specifically, especially if they’ve never traveled abroad before. You cannot meet someone at the baggage carousel, and no one can come in to meet you there either. The carousel areas aren’t accessible from the exterior at all.

I’ve gone to meet tourists at the airport plenty of times, and it always goes the same way: they call me once they’ve grabbed their bags and are ready to go, I ask which exit they’re near, and they tell me which carousel number they’re standing by instead, because that’s the only reference point they have at that moment.

After baggage claim, everyone has to go through customs, and only then do you exit into the arrivals hall. That’s the point where you’ll see drivers and guides holding signs with names, and where anyone meeting you can actually be waiting. So if you’re being picked up, whether by a private transfer driver, a tour guide, or a friend, tell them you’ll find them after you clear customs and walk out into the arrivals hall, not at the carousel.

How To Get To Seoul From Incheon International Airport

By Private Transfer

For the most convenience, book a private transfer before you get there. Drivers will wait at the departure gate with your name on a placard. They’re easy to find and then you they’ll take you right to the door where ever you are staying. We pretty much take this option every time, especially now that we have a child in tow. It’s just the most convenient way to get into Seoul from Incheon International Airport.

Pre-Book: If you aren’t last minute and have a bit more time to book your driver, then use this private transfer option. You can choose whether you want a round trip or one way option, day or night, and you’ll get a professional driver to greet you. Friendly, polite, and super convenient.

• Klook: You can book a private transfer from the airport to popular touristy areas like Myeongdong, Gangnam, Itaewon, Yongsan, and Hongdae.
• Viator: There are a lot of options for private airport transfers available especially if you have large groups.
• kkday: Book at least 24 hours in advance and they can help you get to and from the airport.

By Train

The Airport Railroad Express (AREX) has two trains that go back and forth between Incheon International Airport and Seoul. Know where you’re going though as there are two train options – an Express Train and an All Stop Train.

I generally recommend the train last of the four options for most visitors. There’s simply more transit involved, more steps, and more walking to get from the airport to wherever you’re actually staying, unless your hotel happens to be right at an exit of a station the train stops at, like Hongdae or Seoul Station itself. That said, I know a lot of tourists still prefer it, because the process of just getting on a train and getting off is easier to wrap your head after a long flight than figuring out bus routes or taxi zones.

The Express Train goes directly to Seoul Station in just 43 minutes without stopping. The All Stop Train stops at other stations on the way including Gongdeok, which is an off the beaten but great area to stay, and Hongik University Station, which is popular for nightlife and quirky cafes. This train takes 59-66 minutes to go the entire way.

This is the best budget way to get into the city but it doesn’t get you right to the door of where you’re going and during rush hours there may only be standing room available.

How much does the AREX cost? The Express Train costs ₩13,000 for an adults and ₩9,500 for children while the All-stop Train is ₩4,750–₩5,350 for adults.

What are the major differences between the Express Train and the All Stop Train? The All Stop Train takes 59-66 minutes while the Express Train takes 43 minutes to get to Seoul Station. If you want to get off somewhere that the Express Train doesn’t stop, make sure you take the right train.

How to buy tickets for the AREX?

• In Person: You can buy tickets for AREX in terminal 1 and terminal 2 of the airport at the AREX Travel Center. You can buy the ticket with card or cash but you can also, and should if you’ll be using public transportation a lot while you’re here, buy a local transportation card (T-money) that can be used on all public transportation and topped up throughout your trip.
• Pre Book: There are also options to pre-book so you have one less thing to worry about when you arrive.

By Bus

The bus is a great and affordable way to get into Seoul. The buses have comfy seats and are an affordable way to get into Seoul from the airport. This is also great if you’re headed to a less central district as there are a lot more bus lines to choose from.

Now that my daughter is old enough to walk and handle the trip herself, around 10, we use the airport buses far more than we used to. I’d recommend the bus next, ahead of the train, for most families: the buses are more direct to more areas of the city than the train is, and your luggage stays put underneath the bus for the whole ride instead of you wrangling it through stations and transfers.

The City Limousine Bus is comfortable and very convenient though does take the longest compared to the other options listed. There are Standard buses and Deluxe buses available. Due to the schedules, you may have to wait up to 25 minutes if you’ve just missed a bus.

How much do buses cost? Buses from Incheon International Airport to Seoul cost from ₩16,000 and ₩18,000 for the standard adult fare depending on whether they are standard or deluxe and where they’re headed in the city. FYI: Children under 6 usually ride for free and children ages 6-12 are ₩10,000 – ₩12,000.

How to buy tickets for the bus?

• In Person: For Terminal 1, you can purchase your tickets from the ticket offices next to Exit 4 or Exit 9 after you’ve exited and are inside of Arrival Hall Floor 1. You can also purchase tickets outside next to Exits 4, 6, 7, 8, 11, 13. If you’re in Terminal 2, there are ticket offices on floor B1 located at the 2nd Transportation Center. You must purchase a physical ticket before boarding. Ticket booths and automated ticket machines accept credit cards, but do not accept cash.
• Pre Book: The first few times I came and used the buses, I found it a little confusing because there are a lot of buses and they all go to different districts. It has the districts and bus numbers and you can pre-book if you want, or at least write down which number you’ll want to look for when you arrive.

By Taxi

If you’re traveling with small children, especially ones too little or too jet-lagged to walk, a taxi is honestly the option I’d point you to first if a private transfer isn’t in the cards. This is how we traveled generally when our daughter was small and needed to be held, especially coming off a long flight when jet lag meant she wasn’t walking at all. There’s no platform to stand on, no bus timetable to work around, just a straight line from the taxi stand into the car.

A taxi can take more or less than an hour and it really depends on what time you arrive and where in Seoul you’re headed. This can also greatly affect the price as well. Taxis are available 24/7 which is very convenient and they’ll take you directly to your guest house, hotel, or Airbnb. The journey will take around an hour, depending on traffic.

How much do taxis cost? There isn’t a set rate for the journey from the airport into Seoul and the cost will vary depending on if you’re headed to Hongdae on the west side of the city or as far as Gangnam on the east side of the city. It should cost around ₩60,000-₩100,000, but again that depends on the traffic and distance.

There is also an additional fee for the freeway (so don’t be surprised when the driver adds this on to the fee at the end) and if you’re riding in a taxi between midnight and 4:00am, there is an additional 20% fare increase.

How to get a taxi at the airport? After exiting departures and heading outside, you can easily spot the taxi stand where taxis are usually waiting. They line up by which area of Seoul or further they’re headed so check the signs.

There are usually attendants there during regular hours as well to help you if you’re not sure which area you’re going to. It’s important to stand in the proper line. If you are trying to go to central Seoul and you’re standing in a line for outside of Seoul, the drivers will not want to take you.

This actually happened to us. The last time we got in line to head into Seoul, we didn’t realize our hotel was technically in Gimpo, a suburb just outside the city, not in Seoul proper. An attendant pointed out we were in the wrong line and had us switch. Here’s why that matters: taxis are assigned to either Seoul or outside-Seoul destinations, and they’re required to charge different fares depending on which zone you’re headed to. So if you end up in the wrong line and the driver quotes you a different fare than you expected, it’s not the driver trying to overcharge you, it’s the zone system working as designed. Before you get in line, it’s worth double-checking whether your accommodation is technically inside Seoul or in one of the surrounding cities like Gimpo, Bucheon, or Goyang, so you land in the right line the first time.

Can someone meet me at the baggage carousel?

No. The baggage claim area isn’t accessible from outside, and no one, including drivers and family, can come in to meet you there. You’ll need to clear customs first and exit into the arrivals hall, which is where drivers, guides, and anyone picking you up will actually be waiting with signs.
