The Most Colorful Of Places To Find In Seoul RIGHT NOW!
There’s something about summer in Korea that screams go bold, go vibrant, go colorful… or just go home. Granted, with the heat that is overwhelming the country at the moment, the choice to go home might be really really appealing right now. But, there are far too many things to see and beautiful places to go. So, let’s get out there!
It’s been a hot minute since I was out taking Friday adventures since most of my pals work on Fridays, but this week the timing just worked and I found a fun gal pal to catch up on our colorful fun together.ย

Museum of Fruit (ํธ๋ฃปํธ๋ฃป๋ฎค์ง์)
This exhibition is taking place in Insa 1-gil Culture Space. Just down an alley off of the main Insadong drag is an awesome warehouse that has been converted into some sort of quirky and fruity celebration of color. You can expect to see all of the colors of the rainbow here, not to mention some fruitastic Korean puns. If you want to take some oh so appealing shots, do dress in something light colored so as to easily match it up. This pop-up museum was originally intended to end on September 30th but has apparently continued to astound and just begs visitors to become apart of the fruity backgrounds and rooms. (The fruity museum is still up and running as of January 2019!) It’s also the perfect spot to just have some fun, feel a bit of whimsy and get some cool photos for Instagram if that’s what you’re after. It’s also cool… air conditioned… I mentioned there’s a heat wave in Korea, right?
This exhibition is centered on being an experience with which visitors can take part so don’t plan on going just to spectate. The staff on hand will ask if you want them to take your pic, they’ll hand you props, and they’ll even bring lighting and angle it just right for you. They really really want you to have fun and jump right in.
With a ball pit like this though, how could you not jump right in? Staff also regulates the flow and only lets a certain number of people in at a time to ensure there is space between groups and plenty of time for everyone to take fun pics. We arrived around 1:30 and walked right in, but as we were headed out an hour or so later, there was a line of people waiting. Just keep that in mind.
There are plenty of props to play with, so go with a happy spirit and a good attitude.ย If you are interested in this, then also check out Instasia. It’s not so much an artistic exhibition as it is a ton of fun photo ops, but it’s a great place to have some fun snapping pics and it’ll keep you in the cool indoors for a couple hours too.
I was a fan of the rooms from about midway through until the end. The first ones didn’t really speak to me, but there’s a lot to see and have fun with. Also pay special attention to the neon light signs on the walls. They have some very humorous fruit puns.
If you’re learning Korean, you can tell your teacher you were out learning this weekend. If you don’t get them, snap some pics to look at later and maybe begin studying. It’s never too late to get your Korean on and 90 Day Korean is the place to start if you need a kick in the Korean studying booty.
Back to the matter at hand though, this was fun and just up the road from one of my favorite very small hole in the wall tea houses in Seoul called Moon Bird Only Thinks Of The Moon. Stop in for a tea break after the photo fun and then head into the super fun Running Man Thematic Experience Center that is also in the area because it is fantastic too! You could also see the Alive Museum & Dynamic Maze while you’re there too. Basically, plan to spend the day in Insadong because there is plenty to do, a ton of fun to be had, and some epic photo-ops all around.
- Admission: Adults: W12,000 & Middle School & High School Students: W10,000 (Children under the age of 14 are not permitted entry so be aware mamas and papas. (That’s written in Korean on their site, so it’s likely Korean age 14 FYI))* There are discounts available if you’re one of the first 50 entrants in the morning beginning from 10:30am and available if you purchase tickets online.
- Hours: 10:30am ~ 8:00pm (Last entry is 7:00pm)
Choi Jeong Hwa’s ‘Forest’
Another colorful spot that I just have to talk about it Choi Jeong Hwa’s current outdoor exhibition in Seongbuk-gu. It is pretty stunning to come upon in the light of the sun. Plastic green straining bowls have been stacked ever so tall to become a plastic forest that overtakes a sidewalk. This installation will be here until April of 2019 so there’s plenty of time to go and find it but it is a great pre-cursor to the solo exhibition the artist will have at MMCA this coming autumn.
The green is so vibrant and it will be interesting to see how the color stands up to the elements over the course of the next year. If you visit, plan to have lunch at a little spot just above this “forest” called Local. It’s a little diner style cafe that serves pizzas and has a pleasant atmosphere to take a little break in. I only had coffee while I was there, but the food smelled amazing. If you’ve never heard of this artist, check out this exhibition. If you’re into colorful spots with intricate design, this is the one to find.
