Arte Museum: The Immersive Exhibition To Find In Korea

Ever on the lookout for immersive art experiences, we couldn’t help but step in to the media escape that Arte Museum provides. If you’re like us and always looking out for the cool places to go and things to do in Korea, then there is no doubt that Arte Museum (아르떼뮤지엄) has already been on your radar. Created by d’strict, a digital design firm, there are Arte Museums located in Gangneung, Jeju, and Yeosu and soon to be one opened in Busan, Korea.

In a country that grapples with fine dust every year which causes a major issue with spending time outside, especially if you have little ones, the focus on nature through media that d’strict provides is a strange look into what reality might be like in the future. Escaping to indoor spaces to experience the sights, sounds, and aromas of nature may just be what’s in store if we can’t figure out a few things.

Who is d’strict

d’strict is a creative group and digital design firm that produces different shows based on the space. The ‘Wave’ at COEX had people watching in awe as the water seemed to crash against a non-existent barrier and onlookers oohed and aahed as the wave seemed to undulate towards them. This is the goal of d’strict, a group that strives to stop people in their tracks questioning if what they’re seeing is real or a trick of the eye.

Arte Museum: Explained

Arte Museum is an immersive art exhibition that provides a visual experience that is completed with stimulating sound and aromas. d’strict generally works on collaborative experiences and Arte Museum is no exception. They worked with Hwang Byeong-joon, the two-time Grammy Award winner and head of Soundmirror Korea to create the sound. For the gorgeous aromas, ‘Scentby’, the official Asian rep for the Grasse Institute of Perfumery (GIP), was tapped to create the fragrances.

The Instagrammable Installations To Look Forward To

One thing you’ll notice about the Arte Museum spaces is that they focus a lot on nature. Some installations are the same in the various locations in Korea while some are different. Some of the stand out must-see installations include:

Beach: An endless beach stretches out before you and the waves lap on the shores. The sun sets and rises and you’ll find that visitors end up stretched out on the floor as if they’ve just seated themselves on an actual beach and yet they will stand and not be wet or sandy from the experience.

Waterfall: This massive installation at 8-meters tall is truly amazing. There are 14 angle mirrors that make the waterfall seemingly unending and creates an experience that will have you breathing deeply from the immensity of it.

Wave: A cool room features the piece that made d’strict famous in Korea. A huge wave crashed against an invisible barrier and you jump back having expected it to you hit you. It’s great fun to rock and roll with the waves.

Flower Cosmos: The cosmos is one of the first spaces you’ll enter into and symbolizes the harmony and the universe as flowers fall and flutter from the sky.

Cave: Enter into a cave that continuously changes from rocky surfaces to flowers and more.

Thunder: One really interesting room features a thunderstorm and you can stand back and watch as lightning strikes and the storm unfolds before you.

Star – Milkyway: A stunning room of mirrors and lanterns that playfully change colors and change from light to dark. Just watch out if you’re wearing a dress.

Jungle: Follow the animals that stalk in the night. Experience a mysterious scene in front.

Whale: Dance with a whale in front of you as it swims back and forth infinitely back and forth.

The Thematic Differences

Arte Museum Jeju is the first immersive media art space opened by d’strict. There are 11 colorful media pieces meant to showcase the beauty of Jeju. The theme of this space is “Eternal Nature”.

Arte Museum Yeosu is the second immersive media art space opened by d’strict. There are 11 colorful media art exhibitions that are meant to showcase the sea and natural scenery of Yeosu. The theme of this space is “Ocean”.

Arte Museum Gangneung is the third immersive media art space opened by d’strict. There are 12 colorful media art exhibitions that are meant to reflect the regional characteristics of Gangwon-do and Gangneung. The theme of this space is “Valley”.

Arte Museum, whether you visit in Gangneung, Jeju, Yeosu, or soon Busan, is totally worth it. The different themes mean you might even want to visit all of them.
