What to know about Anthracite Coffee

Anthracite Coffee is a homegrown coffee roaster in South Korea that started with their first branch in an old shoe factory in Hapjeong-dong, Seoul. Anthracite takes various spaces like a shoe factory and embraces their original structure regenerating them into welcoming cafes and workspaces where anyone is welcome to come and sit, work, and create, chat, and sip.

When it comes to coffee, they spend immense time on training and quality control so that coffee is continuously satisfactory.

Anthracite Coffee Seogyo, Seogyo-dong, Seoul, Korea

Anthracite Coffee Seogyo (앤트러사이트 서교점)

Spot this old multi-floor house that has been taken over by Anthracite Coffee in the Seogyo-dong/Mangwon-dong area and you’ll find a space to praise coffee. In this branch of Anthracite, texture was added to decrease the sounds made from the whirring coffee machines so when you sit upstairs in the high ceiling space, it’s like you’re sitting on pews at a church praising the gods of a good brew.

Anthracite Coffee Yeonhui, Yeonhui-dong, Seoul, Korea

Anthracite Coffee Yeonhui (앤트러사이트 연희점)

The darkness of Anthracite Coffee Yeonhui branch is enveloping. You could easily miss the passageway to the second floor as the hall seems too dark for it to possibly be for customers and yet you walk to the end and turn a corner and you’ll see light. Head toward the light to find a large upstairs space with full windows and seats that face the windows so visitors can watch as the light and darkness play in the shadows.

  • Address: 135 Yeonhui-ro, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul (서울시 서대문구 연희로 135)

Anthracite Coffee Hannam, Hannam-dong, Seoul, Korea

Anthracite Coffee Hannam (앤트러사이트 한남점)

This popular coffee spot in Hannam-dong has became a staple in the area for good coffee with a view whether you’re looking out through the windows or at the green plants taking over the interior. This location embraces the stark cement of the building at its core and yet somehow makes it comfortable with plants and wooden tables. Anthracite considers this their most experimental space. I consider it one of the best cafes in Hannam-dong.

Anthracite Coffee Hapjeong, Hapjeong-dong, Seoul, Korea

Anthracite Coffee Hapjeong (앤트러사이트 합정점)

This old shoe factory in Hapjeong was converted into the very spacious Anthracite Coffee cafe that you see today. Similarly dark and a bit foreboding, the aromas of coffee that waft through the space somehow make the ample space feel cozy and comfortable. It’s huge and there always seems to be the perfect table to work at when I visit.

  • Hours: Sunday – Friday: 9:00am ~ 11:00pm; Saturday: 9:00am ~ 12:00am

Anthracite Coffee Jeju (앤트러사이트 제주 한림)

The only one I haven’t yet “collected”, Anthracite opened on Jeju Island in a factory in the Hallim-eub area. They’ve left the floor dirt to allow for the growth of plants that somehow manage to grow through just the light that filters in from the sky light. They have even focused on using this growth and created a beverage menu that uses local agricultural products and the fresh herbs grown on the premises. Similarly to the other cafes they’ve opened, there is a lot of play with light and dark.

Look out for the organic ice cream that they also sell here that is only available at the Jeju branch.

  • Address: 564 Hallim-ro, Hallim-eup, Jeju-si (제주시 한림읍 한림로 564)
  • Hours: Monday – Sunday: 10:00am ~ 7:00pm

There are so many cafes in Seoul and plenty more all around Korea. You can visit visit and visit some more. As a brand, Anthracite is a great concept embracing the natural settings of the spaces they put up shop in and they serve great coffee on top of that. Get ready to collect them all.
