The Adventure Challenge: Review

For Christmas this past year we were gifted with The Adventure Challenge: Family Edition from my mom. It looked like an awesome fun thing to do with family but we put it off a bit and then dug it out when we were headed home this summer. I thought it was a great time to get it out and get the WHOLE family involved.

The Adventure Challenge was a fantastic way to spend time with the family and a unique way to connect and have fun too. If you’re looking for the perfect gift for someone or want this for yourself, this is perfect. Get ready for the fun.

What is The Adventure Challenge?

Basically the idea is to have an adventure and in this case adventure is doing something a bit different. Step out of your boundaries, play games, get creative, and make some fun meaningful  memories. Inside of the books, there are 50 unique missions or adventures to take. There is something for rainy days, days when you want to get out and about and days when you just want to hang out in the yard but do something together. Scratch off the mission and get ready to connect with your family members… or boyfriend/girlfriend, or friends even.

The idea is to be spontaneous and give yourself a bit of a challenge.

Is this only for families?

Actually, they have different editions. There is The Adventure Challenge: Couples Edition, The Adventure Challenge: Friends Edition, and The Adventure Challenge: Solo Edition as well as The Adventure Challenge: Family Edition. Basically, there’s something for everyone.

What We Did

So, here’s the thing. This book is made so that you can spice up your weekends or weeks with the people you’re around quite often. We… did it a bit differently. Because I was headed home for the summer and wanted to get as many members of the extended family involved, people that range in age from newborn to 94, I needed to plan ahead. Rather than scratch off one at a time and do that one on a whim, we scratched off 10 or so at a time in order to plan ahead.

When it came to, maybe, cracking eggs on our heads, that was perfect for the group of 6 year olds in the bunch. But, making a colorful Dr. Seuss-esque meal, we could get some of the older ladies and gents involved. While we didn’t do it exactly the way the book-planners meant, it was a blast and we loved the unique missions they came up with.

How Does It Work

Step 1: Choose an adventure and scratch it off. There are little icons next to each one to let you know a bit about what it might entail like whether you’ll be headed outside or stay inside and if it’s messy or not, etc.

Step 2: Prep the materials for the adventure and don’t forget to get your camera ready too so you can document the fun.

Step 3: Have all of the fun! Some missions take an hour or less while some will require half a day depending on how you want to complete them. The missions are pretty adaptable so if you or your friends/family think it’d be fun to do it a little differently, have at it. I think it’s more about getting everyone involved so do what you can.

Step 4: Take a pic and then stick it in your book so you can look back when you’re done and see all that you’ve completed. What a great keepsake for the summer, year, or even quarantine!

The Adventures!

These are SPOILERS! Skip to the review if you don’t want to see any of the missions. There are 50 fun missions but here were a few that we really got into to give you an idea of what fun is ahead.

Hungry Hungry Humans

If you grew up playing Hungry Hungry Hippos then you might really get into this one. Basically, you make a life-size version and YOU are the hippo! Ballcaps are the mouths and you drag the candy in the center to your base on the side. This was a super fun intro for us and easy to do since we had everything at home already.

Don’t Knock ‘Em Dead

A twist on bowling, the idea is to get the bumpers up, anyone can join in, and the winner is the person with the LOWEST score! A lot more difficult to do than it might sound and hilarious to try and fail since I’m really competitive and really just wanted to hit all of the pins.

Cat Burglar

Another one that didn’t require us to get too much in the way of materials, we took a large ball of yarn, created an obstacle course. This is one that was suggested inside, but we took it outside to the deck. When people touch the line, they get squirted with water. This was an excellent summer day in the backyard activity.

Watch Me Whip

If you’re a fan of that lip sync battle TV show, then you’ll probably love this activity. The book suggests that there should be two teams, but split into couples. The other teams choose the songs for the each other and then the battle begins. Then we took the winners from the head-to-head couples battles and put them together for an ultimate round. To say it was amazingly fun and historical is an understatement.

Our Review

We LOVED this addition to our family adventures. We have completed a bit more than half and have a bit more to go but can’t wait to complete the entire thing.

Pros

  • Spontaneity Infused: Get ready to get outside of your comfort zone or just feel like a kid again. Great way to be a bit spontaneous (if you want to be) or just do something different together.
  • Adaptable: Some of the missions we adapted to our surroundings or took outside when they were recommended for indoors and vice versa. Once you get into the book, it’s easy to see how you can really make it your own if you want to, which is great in my opinion.
  • Creative: The games and adventures were really unique which we loved. Some were reminiscent of reunion-style games while others were action packed and others quiet together time. Loved the options.
  • Easy To Use: The concept is simple and straight forward. Just pick it up and you are ready to go.
  • Quality Time Inducer: I loved that this helped everyone disconnect and connect with each other. Sometimes you just need a little push to do something together, and this is it.

Cons

  • Not Always Scratchable: The only thing I would change, is the scratch-off style of the book. Some of the missions just wouldn’t come off right for some reason and we couldn’t read them. We could still do them because we could use the QR code in the book to access the missions online. But, I’d probably want to see it changed to a sticker or something just so there was no issue. Also, the scratching stuff can be a bit messy. I know some people love that sensation of scratching off something, I really don’t so I tried to get other people to do this part for me. Something about the scraping isn’t my jam.
  • Can’t Be Prepared: We were all good until I scratched off one and it said we needed to make a deck of 52 poster-size cards for a huge Go Fish game. To be honest, I was like, who the heck has 52 posters lying around and what kid is going to wait through the making of that? After that is when I scratched a few in one go so I could make sure I had what I needed in the moment. That might be because I have a 6 year old though. With older kids that can be patient a bit better, you’d probably be fine to go one by one.

Get Your Own

They have everything on their website ready to go. If you don’t have your own polaroid camera, we did, they also sell the product in bundled versions to get the book and camera.

Don’t miss out on all of the fun!
