The Langogo AI Translator: A Review Of The Real-Time Translation Device

Once you start traveling, you realize how many MORE places there are to see. You might also realize how many of those places don’t speak your language and while some people may be daunted by the thought of going to a place where communication will be difficult, it revs my engines.

If you’ve got time to learn some key phrases before you travel, awesome. If not though, in steps an AI translator. Taking a translating device on travels really changes the way you can travel. Maybe you have an allergy or want to make sure the taxi driver is taking you to the right place. In both of those situations an accurate translator is extremely helpful.

We were recently down in Taiwan and I realized how different my husband and I are when it comes to asking questions and getting answers. He actually CAN read some Mandarin because all Koreans learned to read it back when he was in school. That made finding the bathroom a whole lot easier.

But when it came to walking up and talking to strangers, he would just rather sit and watch and try to figure it out for far longer than I wanted to. I, on the other hand, will walk over, not speaking a lick of the language, and smile and use lots of hand motions to figure out what is what. Is it the most efficient use of language? Maybe not, but we caught our ferries and we found our beaches, so it’s a workable solution.

I’ve traveled a lot more than my husband as well and have just found that a smile goes a long way in communicating.

Had I been equipped with the new Langogo device, I think we both would have been happier campers though. We could have easily figured out that the driver we were waiting for had been changed for another rather than standing outside of the hotel for 30 minutes in front of a waiting car that we didn’t think was ours.

We could have easily communicated that we just wanted a bowl of plain rice and veg for our daughter and we could handle the rest as is. We ended up with a table full of very plain, steamed fish and veg for all of us. It was filling, but not what we were trying to say.

What is the Langogo?

The Langogo is the world’s first artificial intelligence (AI)-powered translator. And while that’s the biggest reason to get the device, it’s actually more than that, but I’ll get into that in a bit. The device can translate more than 60 languages and offers very close to accurate and natural sounding translations. In our experience, I wouldn’t say it was perfect when going between English and Korean, but it was pretty close to spot on. It definitely got the point across in any case and that is pretty effective in my book.

Langogo is more than just a translator though, it can connect to Wi-Fi and be used as a Hotspot that can be shared with up to six devices. The device is equipped with Cloud Sim technology so it won’t waste phone data or battery. The device can connect to mobile networks without a SIM card, too.

How easy is it to use this AI translator?

That question is leading because it is super easy to get started with this device. There are few buttons so it gets right to the point. Turn the device on with the ‘Power’ button, select ‘Translation’ and then press the button on the side to begin translating. I was feverishly trying to choose the languages at first and switch them back and forth when Korean and English was being spoken, but you do NOT have to do that. Be smarter than me and trust the AI in AI-translator. After selecting the two languages to go between, the language being spoken is actually auto-detected which was an awesome light bulb moment for me. The device can recognize and translate between two languages in just seconds. Now doesn’t that sound easy?

What else should I know about this real-time translating device?

The device is also made to be easy to use in a myriad of locations. There is voice recognition and noise cancelling which means when you’re in a crowded environment, the Langogo will be able to decipher your voice from the others and translate. I messed around with this at a daycare with 40 toddlers running around and it sure found my voice above those hoodlums.

The device also comes with a voice assistant named Euri which I couldn’t test out yet because it’s not up and running but essentially, Euri will be able to provide travel information while you’re on the go. I look forward to when that’s available on my device.

One of the best things about the device is the size. It’s small and comes with a lanyard so while you’re juggling everything else you need while traveling, you can have it on your wrist while you figure out what’s what on the go. I’m juggling ten things at once always, and this was not taking up space or giving me a hernia among the items I carried this week, so win win.

What I liked best about the Langogo

One of the things I found super interesting was watching the screen as the Langogo deciphered what I was saying. It went through variations in seconds to find what made the most sense and was correct each time. I also tried to test and trick it a bit by asking it questions like, “how would you say ((this)) in Korean?” and rather than translating the ((this)) word, it kept it in English because obviously that was the question. I found that pretty fascinating.

It actually could make for a great little study buddy if you’re headed out to a country and want to learn some basic words and phrases. The device provides a typed translation on the screen as well as an oral translation from the speakers. How helpful is that? Even if the person listening doesn’t hear what comes from the device, they’d still be able to read it.

Do you need an AI translator in Korea?

It really depends how much traveling you’ll be doing in Korea and where you’ll be going in my opinion. In Seoul, subway maps have English and everyone from business workers to convenience store workers can speak some English. No, you probably won’t get into in depth conversations, but you can get by. That said, if you have an allergy, a translator from English to Korean is extremely helpful. Koreans don’t have that many allergies in general and don’t understand the seriousness and a lot of menus don’t even list all of the ingredients.

Also, if you’re planning to travel outside of Seoul into more rural areas, you’ll meet more people that don’t speak English at all or as often. In these cases a real-time translation device could be extremely useful. Should you learn a few phrases like, “hello”, “please”, and “thank you”? Absolutely. But, for more elongated conversation an the Langogo AI translator would be very helpful. Check online for updated prices on the device.

This little device really blew my socks off after I got my head around how “smart” it is. It’s more intuitive than I wanted to believe and makes for very easy use. I sure wish we had this little guy in Taiwan with us, but can’t wait to try it on our  next adventure.

Where’s the video!??! I was looking forward to seeing you and Jae-oo have a conversation. 😉 But this thing is so great, eh? Can’t wait to take it on my next trip (which may actually be to Taiwan – need to pick your brain). 🙂
