As new residents of the island, I was on the lookout for how everyone celebrates the holidays down here. I’m well versed in how to celebrate Christmas in Seoul, but Jeju?

What’s In Store: The Merry Magic

When you pull up, you’ll quickly notice there isn’t a lot of the way of parking. Be prepared to drive around the block also because the navigation will take you to the exit. Just go around the block to enter the street from the other end and find parking where you can. Yes, you may need to use that parallel parking skill.

Once out of the car, you’ll feel the warm embrace of Christmas. Twinkling lights, mulled wine, and cheerful Christmas music sets the stage for a perfect holiday outing. Here are just a few of the highlights:

Holiday Shopping Heaven

The market is small but has some great vendors selling everything from homemade and crafted products to Christmas snow globes and decorations from abroad. There are plenty of advent calendars to go around and music boxes, too.

We came upon a local who runs a shop that sells Matryoshka dolls and she paints some adorable Christmas and Jeju-inspired versions. She has other Russian toys and was lovely to talk with. You can find her at the market or head to her shop, Matryo (마트료 미술점) in Aewol for a painting class to decorate your own.

Feeling crafty? The market offers a wreath-making activity where you can create your own personalized holiday decoration. It’s a great way to add a homemade touch to your festive decor.

Seasonal Treats

No Christmas market is complete without delicious food and drinks. Treat yourself to mulled wine, which is always very cozy, or sample some of the local beer offerings. They even have a promotion: buy more than 10 cans of beer, and they’ll ship them for free—an excellent option for sending end-of-the-year gifts to friends or family.
