What To Know
The Million Rose Garden was created by the Bucheon City Government in 1995 to improve and beautify the area. It quickly grew in popularity, expanding to over 150,000 rose plants by 1998. With just 7 to 10 blooms per plant, the garden easily boasts over one million roses in bloom.
To celebrate, the city hosts the annual Bucheon Rose Festival, a vibrant event that attracts flower lovers, photographers, and tourists every year.
When The Flowers Bloom
We visited in June after it it had rained quite a bit so some of the roses were on their last legs, but that also meant we got to enjoy the garden practically on our own.
For the best photos, aim to visit in the early morning or golden hour in the evening when lighting is soft. Midday visits can be hot and bright, but the views are stunning no matter the time.
You can walk along the paths and into the flowers. As they are on the side of a mountain, there is some uphill walking you’ll have to do. If you’ve got kids with you, there’s also a playground up in shade behind the small pavilion.
As the garden is very sunny during the day and uncovered for the most part, you’ll want to walk up into the shaded areas along the forested part of the mountain to take a seat and cool off. It’s beautiful from every vantage point of course though, so sit back, relax, and just enjoy the views.
Walk through a rose covered tunnel and find the other various photo zones as there always are in Korea though here, they really don’t detract from the beauty of the roses themselves, so don’t worry. The park is quite vast so if you enter from one side, make sure you really walk across to the other side and up to see the park from every angle and every kind of rose that is featured.
Roses have become an especially popular flower over the years in Korea so if you visit during the festival period, you’ll find a ton of people that also want to enjoy the flowers, the colors, the blooms, and everything that surrounds them.
That said, everyone loves getting photos just as much as the next person in Korea so you can always get good shots and people don’t mind stepping aside to let you get one. Whether you want to sit among them or just enjoy the views, you can do that here.
