Jeonju Itinerary
How To Get There
Address: 1-10 Jamandong 1-gil, Wansan-gu, Jeonju-si, Jeollabuk-do (전라북도 전주시 완산구 자만동1길 1-10)
If you’re starting from the Jeonju Hanok Village, head to the Omokdae and Imokdae pavilions and then find the Omokgyo Bridge. At the end of the bridge, there’s a sign post with a map guiding you to Jaman Mural Village. From Jeonju Hanok Village, it’s about a 10 minute walk.
What To See
Along the popular walking ridge with Omokdae and Imokdae where people gather for views out over the tiled rooftops of the Hanok village sits Jaman Mural Village. From the popular pavilions, you just head across the Omokgyo Bridge to find the entrance to Jaman Mural Village.
The village is situated on a rather steep hill with winding streets so keep that in mind if anyone in your group isn’t ready for a bit of an uphill traipse. At the entrance to the village you’ll find Oksangdalbit guesthouse and cafe. You might also notice Kumkuneun Nalgae. These are two sort of different spots to stay if you want to stay near the Jeonju Hanok Village but not in it.
As you walk through the village, you’ll come to Umonaemo Shimteu, a rest area where you might also get to see people singing and busking. Follow the road that winds uphill and you’ll find both western and eastern art from classic anime movies like Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro to western giants like The Beatles and even Adventure Time. How many of these cartoons do you recognize?
Plaques of the artists can be seen adjacent to many of the creations, but not all of them. It’s really nice to be able to see the creator behind the murals. As you climb higher you’ll find murals and trinket shops scattered between cafes. Definitely take a break with a view inside one of the cafes.
If you are looking for a place to get a little something to drink and eat while looking over Jeonju from a beautiful vantage point, Daldongnae Coffee Shop is the only place around where you can go on a date with the legendary E.T on the inside and absorb the quiet view on the outside. If it’s hot, the employees will also provide fans as long as there aren’t too many groups there. The smoothies are especially delicious, especially the kiwi and blueberry flavors.
A walk up into the mural village is bound to be a bit hot in the summer and even on a cool day, will still make you warm so take the time for a break at the top before you head back down. There are some good options up there.
Mural villages like this are usually pretty popular with young Korean students and couples. Much like the Ihwa Mural Village in Seoul, you’ll find couples dressed in matching attire taking photos to remember the day.
If you’re in Jeonju and want to check out some more art and culture spaces, also check out the Sansok Lighthouse. The unique arts and culture space a hidden gem and great for kids too. If you’re in Jeonju and looking to fill your weekend with things to do, there’s plenty and this is just one. Have fun in Jeonju, Korea!
