Explore 8 Themed Floors at Hongdae’s Ultimate Culture Cafe

When most people are looking for a fun night out neighborhood in Seoul, an area filled with cafes, buskers, street art, and fun, they’re probably looking for Hongdae. There are so many things to do in Hongdae that you could spend days upon days exploring. Because of this, it makes for a great district to stay in Seoul (speaking as someone who lived there for a decade). Now that you’ve got your bearings, we’re going to zoom in to a spot that’s about to blow up, if you ask me.

If you’ve walked down the main shopping and fun street of Hongdae recently, you may have noticed the 8-story building across from Sangsang Madang and Su Luxury Noraebang has had a major makeover. This cafe, or culture space, is pretty amazing and has everything from coffee to photo-op spots, and even lockers to store your things. Get ready to find Hongdae Cafe (ㅎㄷ Café/ 홍대카페).

Eight Themed Floors

There are cafes upon cafes in Hongdae and they feature so many different themes, there is always something for everyone whether you’re looking for K-pop, modern, cute, and even traditional.

What makes Hongdae Cafe stand out among the crowd is how they feature 8 floors of varying themes. Listen to a record on one floor and then head to the desert on another. Get ready to explore the themed floors of Hongdae Cafe and find out where you’ll want to sit!

8th Floor: Get Your Food and Drinks Here First

When you first head in, you’ll go up to the 8th floor to get the fun started. This is where you’ll find the cafe’s main space. You need to make a purchase first before exploring the rest of the floors. Choose from coffees, teas, cakes, and desserts.

9th Floor: Rooftop Views

While you wait for your drinks, or if you want to get a spectacular view out over the area, even as far out as Yeouido Island, head up to the rooftop. They have hosted concerts up on the rooftop, but visit on a normal day and you can take a seat and just enjoy the show. Perhaps take in the sunset. It would be epic up here. It’s tough to find a rooftop in Hongdae, so keep this one tucked away as a hidden gem.

7th Floor: K-pop Media with Beanbag Seating

Now it’s time to start heading downstairs. The next floor down is a K-pop Media floor, though when I visited there were hosting a book exhibition so this media space was focused on promoting various books. Stop in to see what’s going on and enjoy those beanbag chairs if you just want to relax and chill.

6th Floor: LP Music Space With Calming Vibes

The next floor is where you’ll want to jam. Grab an LP, find a turntable, sit down, and put on the headphones. This space has low light, good vibes, and you could sit with a group of friends or just enjoy some alone time with some jams.

5th Floor: Art & Calming Surroundings

This floor is bright and airy and the art is changed out regularly. The seating is set up to give everyone a good vantage point of the art on the walls. If you want to have a good chat with friends with some inspiration surrounding you, this is the floor you should find.

4th Floor: Jeju Vibes & Traditional Seating

This was one of my favorite floors. It feels as if you’ve been swept away to Jeju Island. There is a video of lapping waves that plays on the wall and in front of it is a fountain with water that flows along the rocks and plants. Take a seat at a table or on a more traditional platform and enjoy the soothing ambiance.

3rd Floor: Cacti Desert & Greenhouse Vibes

My favorite floor by far was where the cacti rein supreme. This desert greenhouse is bright, airy, and full of natural green beauty. If you need a natural pick-me-up, stop into this floor. Couldn’t understand why it was completely empty when I visited. I’d stay here all day.

B1: HD Stage & Lockers

Not open every day, and not open all of the time, this space is open to FAM clubs and private events. Singers and groups can take the stage, concerts can be watched live, and all of the K-pop fun can be had in this fantastic space. Check their posters upstairs to see what’s going on.

One highlight of the floor that I know a lot of tourists and locals that spend the day in Hongdae will appreciate, is that on B1, you can also find lockers lockers lockers! While the lockers in Hongdae Station can often be filled, you might check here and have some luck. They were empty when I stopped in.

The multi-floor cafe and culture space is a fantastic place in central Hongdae. Take a seat and watch the people go by on the bustling road below. Visit with friends and watch the sunset from the rooftop. Or just listen to some jams while you wait for a show in the basement.
