Art Classes and Contemporary Art at CICA in Gimpo

We are always on the lookout for immersive experiences and opportunities to learn and being lovers of all things art museums in Seoul, I was searching out other awesome art spaces and came upon the Czong Institute of Contemporary Art, or CICA, in nearby Gimpo, Korea.

If you like heading off to the unknown, taking adventure, and getting the kids involved, definitely look into this fun artistic opportunity. Smaller local art spaces like CICA as well as SODA Museum in Hwaseong are super fun to visit in Korea and get involved with. Don’t miss these artistic opportunities in Korea.

What To Know

Founded in 1994, CICA is an art space, but more than that is a cultural space that invites the community in to experience art in a variety of ways.

The museum houses five gallery spaces and nearby on the grounds there is another building, a flex space, that houses a cafe, and art studio. The grounds have hosted everything from social gatherings to weddings.

According to the CICA guidebook, the museum has networked with over 5,000 international artists since 1994, and organized experimental publications titled “New Media Art,” “Art Yellow Book” and “Artist Statement.” They have a ton of info on their website, more than a lot of the smaller local art spaces in Korea, so check it out for more info.

CICA Exhibitions

CICA hosts exhibitions that promote both local and international artists. Earlier this year, they hosted an exhibition with 44 Korean and foreign artists and they work to display contemporary works of photography, paintings, video, interactive art, sculpture, and installation work so there is a lot to enjoy and keep going back for.

CICA has hosted international selective exhibitions on broader subjects such as the abstract mind, breath, circle, color, concept, contemporary landscapes, drawings now, figures, form, nature, and more.

They seem to be consistently hosting events, evolving to bring in the community, and creating new opportunities for adults and children to learn about contemporary art forms.

CICA Kids Lab

The reason we sought out a visit to CICA was because I found a fantastic kids art program on their site. We enjoyed it so much the first time, we went back the next week for another class, too!

The CICA Kids Lab was introduced in 2020 and allows children to explore every field of STEAM, helping them to understand, observe, create, and discuss visual culture and develop more logical and critical thinking skills. It was launched by Leejin Kim, CICA’s art director, and an artist specializing in new media and visual & cultural studies.

On their website, you can find information for the programs that offer options for different ages, and showcase different projects. When you arrive, you can check in at the cafe and then check out the studio below with the teacher as you take your child down. They have a ton of space with every corner filled with visual elements and things the children will be working with.

If you want to sign your child up, check out the changing programs on their website, choose a time and then while they’re creating art in the studio, you can enjoy the quiet cafe upstairs.
