A Very Short But Sweet Trip to Sydney, Australia
The first day in Australia was over and we had two days to see some sights before we were headed back to Seoul. We took a walk down the road to a beautiful sandy beach in the morning. The only other people around were some surfers trying to catch the waves. We decided to check out the beach and then head into Sydney for the evening, so no swimming for us unfortunately. But if I were going to swim, I think Wollongong looked like a good place to do it. With lighthouses jutting out in the distance and a huge beach to spread out on, there wasn’t much else to want in a good picturesque place to enjoy the sun and water.

Once in the city and settled in to our new hotel room, we decided to head out to find some food and check out The Rocks. My mother was pretty on top of things and our hotel was just two minutes from The Rocks. We walked across the street and straight into the First Fleet Park and onto the boardwalk of The Circular Quay, from which we had a great view of the Sydney Opera House. We got some nice shots, which turned out to be lucky because the next day a gigantic cruise liner had docked in the harbor and we couldn’t see the Opera House from the boardwalk anymore. We continued to the end and saw the Sydney Harbour Bridge and those people brave enough to, climbing over the top of it.
We walked along the cobbled streets of the area where European settlers led by Captain Arthur Phillip first landed in 1788. We walked down George Street which has collected quite the array of cafes, restaurants and bars and then headed down a small alley to find Nurses Walk to find The Vintage Café to eat some dinner. It was a little pricey, but the tapas dishes were good and between the three of us for dinner we shared three tapas dishes and a salad, the perfect amount. We took a little walk in the night air before retiring to our room a bit earlier than the night before, so that we would be able to wake up bright and early the next day and get a full day of sightseeing in Sydney.
It was Sunday, and downtown Sydney was pretty quiet, though to be fair, it was 8 o’clock in the morning. We had a few things on our list to see and headed off. We went up into the Sydney Tower, a 300 meter tall building and the second tallest structure in the southern hemisphere and got some great panoramic views of the city as well as a great shot of us with a koala.
We also saw beautifully old and ornate structures like the Queen Victoria Building, originally opened in 1898, it held cafes and a concert hall and then was used for the central library and government offices before becoming pretty run down. In 1984 it was restored and is now a shopping mall. We ended in Hyde Park and enjoyed the lush green grass and the impromptu musicians who had found benches to play music from for the crowds now starting to come out of the nearby churches. It only took a couple of hours to get a good look downtown and we headed back to the hotel so that mom could take a rest. Jae-oo and I headed back to The Rocks to find some lunch.
After a delicious lunch at The Orient Hotel we headed back to the hotel where we met up with the rest of our family. My new brother-in-law suggested we catch a ferry over to Watson’s Bay to enjoy the scenery and some good fish and chips for dinner. It was definitely worth the ferry ride. After docking we followed the path from the docks straight and ended up on the top of a huge cliff looking out over the deep blue ocean. We got a family photo, which included the newest member and ate dinner together. It was a perfect way to end our time in Sydney. We left bright and early the next day happy to have had the opportunity to visit Sydney and sure that we will visit again in the future.
Our New Family… Welcome to Jason!
