Where To Pull Over For Chicken Stew In Gapyeong: Donggigan

We are known to take quite a few road trips on the regular and because of that, I’m constantly marking good looking restaurants on my map and then just hoping that we’ll be passing by on one of those said road trips.

The past two times we’ve transited through Gapyeong, we made sure to stop at one of the best places to eat in Gapeyong, Donggigan (๋™๊ธฐ๊ฐ„). It’s ideally located if you’re heading to Gapyeong to see Nami Island, Koo House, or maybe the hidden Yellow Bridge Museum or some other fun tourist spot in the area. Eat here, and then find all of these other cool things to do in Gapyeong.

The Atmosphere

Driving up the road to this rustic locale, you’ll wonder if you’ve taken a wrong turn on the narrow road which barely fits two cars. But you haven’t.

Once you’ve parked, you’ll find the main building and a number of other rustic looking buildings and in the middle a fire pit with log chairs. The buildings are surrounded by large Korean fermenting pots and walls covered in wooden ornaments. These are wishes for the future. You can make one and hung your own as well.

There are multiple seating options, a large building with tables and chairs if floor seating isn’t quite right for you, but the best seating in my opinion are the little huts that seat individual groups. They’re just so cute and really give you the vibe of sitting in that forest surrounding with a cozy warm stew. It’s so enticing. We’ve visited twice now and grab a hut each time. It’s my favorite place for a meal in Gapyeong by far.

The Food

Not only are the meals here delicious, but they are hearty. The most popular menu items are the spicy young boiled chicken stew (ํ† ์ข…๋‹ญ๋ณถ์Œํƒ•), and young boiled chicken stew (ํ† ์ข…๋‹ญ๋ฐฑ์ˆ™). We always go for the boiled chicken stew that isn’t spicy. It has a deep umami taste that isn’t spicy but perfectly cozy. Somehow we visited both times in the autumn and it was so perfect for that time of year.

The pot is brought to the table and placed on a table stove to heat up. Move the greens into the broth and once it comes to a boil, it’s ready to eat. The meal is served with simple side dishes. Once you’ve eaten the chicken and removed all of the bones from the stew, you then add the rice to the pot to boil it down to a porridge so you can finish every last drop of that healthy broth. You might think you’re full from the delicious chicken and stew, but save room for that porridge. It’s so delicious.

If you’re looking for the best place to eat in Gapyeong, this is definitely spot that has to be on that list. Try it for yourself and see. Have been twice and will go again.
