The Kiwi Chamber Is Back With Their Annual New Zealand Wine Festival In Seoul & Busan!

The Kiwi Chamber is celebrating their 10th annual wine festival here in Seoul on May 26th and I’ve cleared my calendar for it, have you?

If you don’t live in Seoul or May 26 doesn’t work for you, fear not, as the event is happening TWICE! The second event will be held in Busan on June 2nd. I have learned much about wine after attending various events hosted by and hosting with Ian from Vineworks so I think I’m ready to sip, gurgle and sniff my way around some Kiwi wines.

The event in Seoul will be held in the scenic outdoor waterfall garden of the Grand Hyatt Hotel and will fall under the theme “Pure Discovery New Zealand Wine”. Tony Garrett, Chairman of The Kiwi Chamber went on to explain, “Our theme, Pure Discovery New Zealand Wine, will allow the participant to explore and “discover” the new varieties we have from all the regions within New Zealand. Whether it be a fruity Pinot Gris with apple and pear notes from the North to a southern Pinot Noir with full flavoured plum notes, New Zealand has it all. We are blessed with a wide range of climates and soil types which allow us to offer a full spectrum of wines to the consumer.”

With a selection of quality red and white wines from over 20 of New Zealand’s top vineyards any wine lover, or true oenophile, shouldn’t miss this.

Tony Garrett, Chairman of The Kiwi Chamber

The 10th Anniversary of the Kiwi Chamber New Zealand Wine Festival is very significant. The Kiwi Chamber was established to facilitate and profile business networks and projects with Korea; wine is a major part of this.

Through our wine festivals, the growth of New Zealand wine and the interest of Korean consumers in our wine is definitely been a big benefit for our vineyards. As we celebrate 10 years of the chamber and New Zealand Wine Festival in Seoul, it is amazing to see how the chamber has grown from its small beginnings to where it is today.

Apart from our core activities to facilitate business opportunities between our two countries, we also host two major wine festivals annually, one in Seoul and one in Busan, and numerous other events including our amazing Year-end Grand Hui which caps off each year.

New Zealand is now the 10th largest exporter to Korea and saw a 45% increase in wine exports after the Korea-New Zealand FTA took effect in December of 2015. Explains why I’ve seen and enjoyed more New Zealand wine in recent years. There are currently over 50 premium New Zealand wine brands available in Korea.

The events won’t just feature some superb wine though, they will also provide a Kiwi-themed gastronomic experience. Expect a casual outdoor BBQ-style buffet for the Seoul event and a gourmet buffet for the Busan event. And if that’s not enough, though they had me at wine, both festivals will feature lucky draws with prizes including hotel packages, gift sets and the grand prize is an economy ticket to New Zealand sponsored by Singapore Airlines. Now doesn’t that want to make you go?

Sunny Myung, Project Manager for the New Zealand Wine Festival and President of Tiwi Trade when asked why New Zealand wine is special

New Zealand’s special combination of soil, climate and water, the innovative pioneering spirit and commitment to quality all come together to deliver unique and distinctive wine experiences. New Zealand has built a reputation for producing the world’s best Sauvignon Blanc.

For example, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is rated internationally as the definitive benchmark style for this varietal. The cooling temperatures provide a long, slow ripening period resulting in flavor growth while still holding a fresh acidity that make New Zealand wine so unique. Also, for New Zealand’s wine industry it represents a commitment to protect the places that make our famous wines. New Zealand is widely recognized as having a world-leading sustainability program and it was one of the first to be established in the international wine industry. New Zealand Winegrowers’ Sustainability Policy requires all wine to be made from 100% certified grapes in fully certified wine-making facilities.

Definitely a much pricier/ritzier event than Daejeon’s Wine Festival (at just 10,000 entrance fee) and I bet you won’t see people spitting wine out, walking away with full bottles or getting too drunk too fast. With food there, I hope people will be on their best behavior and sniff, sip and gurgle with the best of them 😛 Have a great time Hallie and can’t wait to read your review of it on your blog.

130,000? That’s a lot of money, but I guess it’s the price you have to pay to experience good quality wines. Looking forward to read about your experience in the wine festival.

I love drinking and so does my husband. He sneaks in bottles (2-3 each time) of wine from his trips and regularly looks at the wine corners here and this would be a great event if not for the price, hahaha…. so I will live the night through your upcoming post about it. Enjoy!

This seems really cool! I’m from New Zealand and this is something I would love to attend. It’s quite expensive though, so maybe in the coming years! It’s always nice to get a taste of home. I actually haven’t noticed New Zealand wine in Korea yet, but I guess that means I just haven’t been looking closely enough! Will you write a post about the event? I would love to hear about what it’s like!
